Could someone please tell me what gelling is? Im new to this. I tried searching for it on here but all I see is people saying whether or not they do it. I haven't seen the term in any of the soapmaking books I have. Does it mean to not insulate after pouring into molds?

Gelling is when the soap starts looking darker in the middle, softens and the darker color goes all the way to the edges. Insulation depends on what oils/butters or fragrances are used. Some fragrances heat up in the mold, so no insulation is needed. For others, you need insulation like towels so the soap gels. If you are using a wooden mold, it will most likely gel as wood insulates. If you have a small plastic mold, it will most likely not gel. The larger the batch, the more likely it will gel.

So how do I know whether or not to cover up the mold?

Then I would insulate, if you want your soap to gel. Plastic molds don't retain heat like wooden molds do.

I'm not sure I'd want all of my soaps to be lighter in color but it's great to know. There are times when it's necessary to achieve a particular look. You can't complain about using less fragrance! Thank you so much for the response. I'd love to see this in soapmaking books. I feel I learn more off this forum than anywhere.

Unsure whether or not to gel? Try it both ways and see which way you like it better.

I've tried both ways. IMHO, the ungelled soap is more opaque with a lighter color, but is more "crumbly". Gelled soap is more translucent and doesn't crumble when cut. It's just a a matter of personal preference. I prefer to gel.
