Teach Soap

I have been offered a large quantity of coconut oil that is food grade. Would you use this in soap? TIA

I don't see why you couldn't... I buy the LoAna from Walmart when I can't get to my Knoxville supplier and it works just fine in soap. Lucky you!

Thanks that is good to know. The label say containe TBHQ and Citric Acid, and Dimethylpolysiloxane so I thought perhaps it wasn't proper for soaping.

Does anyone know what these additives are included for, is it for shelf life?

It should be ok. Be aware that some oils have an anti foaming agent which might affect your bubbles.

It does not cause discoloration even in the presence of iron, and does not change flavor or odor of the material to which it is added" and "Citric acid is a weak organic acid. It is a natural preservative and is also used to add an acidic, or sour, taste to foods and soft drinks." and "Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) belongs to a group of polymeric organosilicon compounds that are commonly referred to as silicones. So, it looks like it does have an anti-foaming agent in it as Soapbuddy said it might.

So Jessi, which one are you saying is the anti-foaming agent? Is it the silicone based one? Maybe I misread something because I didn't see anything that said "non-foaming" to me. Oh well, I wonder why the silicone based ingredient is in there at all, but I would try it if I had a free supply of oil. The worst that can happen is that you need to add a bit more of another oil to make up the difference, but you may not notice one at all. Please let us know either way so we all can learn from your experience, and good luck!

Yeah, it's the Polydimethylsiloxane near the end of the description where it says what it is used in (and for), "food (anti-foaming agent)." I was just curious what they all were and were for. I guess I'm a wee bit geeky as well.
