Teach Soap

I understand that while curing the soaps should get air circulation, semi, but not fully out in the open. If the soaps are stored near each other, say two smells in one container, will soaps of different flavors mix, and make each other smell differently? Also wondering, will they pick up household smells, such as from being stored near the kitchen from cooking foods?

I cure my soaps on top of my kitchen cabinets because I have no room elsewhere in the house. I usually leave all scents up there for 6-8 weeks and then put them in cardboard boxes with the top open, separated by scent. I don't notice any kitchen smells imparting to the soaps during cure, but I do not have the best sniffer. Some strong scents, if stored too close to another scent, will "rub off." I do a eucalyptus & spearmint soap that will transfer scent onto anything near it. It needs to be segregated.

When I did my leather soap and put it into the fridge to non-gel my husband complained that the food tasted like leather (I'm not sure what leather tastes like). And mind you it was only overnight. I do keep my soaps a short distance apart when curing in the basement.

Bubbles2 that is funny because I made a peach scented soap the other day and my DH said our garlic bread tasted like peach!

At least he would know what peach tastes like... have you ever eatten leather? I asked the DH to explaine and he could not... just said 'trust me'. That leather soap has now cured and I love the scent.... its like going into a leather store and just standing there breathing it all in. I have a bar in my kitchen (not being used) so I can pick it up and get a fix every now and then

Thanks, havent gotten to making it yet, but was test mixing some oils today, wow so strong, and my hands smell like a prostitute! I guess Ill keep them away from each other, and ill wear gloves next time I blend FO's. I cant stand myself!

Also had a Q about EO vs FO...I know EO is more concentrated correct? Are there disadvantages to using one over the other? Besides EO costs more, but you use less. Do both hold up well without fading over time? Ive been searching the forum so as not to post repetitive Q's Ive gone backwards from pg. 40 to 17 and I cant take reading anymore!

Quality fragrance oil can be just as strong as essential oils. That's why you would not use either undiluted. As far as therapeutic properties of essential oils in soap, it's a toss up. I feel that soap is not on the skin long enough to get true therapeutic properties in soap. Plus the lye will eat up some of those properties.
