How do I add Fragrance Oil to a lotion Base? The company I bought a lotion base from said they don't use Fragrance Oils and the ratio for each EO is different. They said to start with a few drops stir it well let it sit for a while then add more and repeat the process until my nose is pleased. How is that helpful?

Rather than buying a base is it easier to just make it from scratch because this seems more difficult. I don't know exactly how much to add to a base which I thought would make the process easier and a bit safer.

Thanks

You might try using the fragrance calc on BB's home page. It's super easy and it's helped me quite a bit.

Best of luck,

Wherever you purchased the FO from should have the usage rate listed for each of their FO's. They generally list soaps/creams and balms/and lotions, so I would go to them and see if I could find it. If not, I would call and ask them. If they say they don't know, then make sure that you ask if their FO's are skin safe in the first place! If they say they are skin safe, but don't offer usage rates, I would be wondering about the truth of that statement, but if you want to risk it, then I would start w/ looking at the BB calculator, then experiment.

As for making your own, it is certainly your choice and your preference. I personally believe in making your own if you are selling the products, but I see that a good many people disagree with me. As for which is easier, a base requires a bit less work, but making your own from scratch is an education and requires that you be educated in the craft in order to make it. I feel that education is of paramount importance when selling skin care products. So, for me, the rewards of creating it from scratch far outweigh the inconvenience. This is my greatest pet peeve though, and you don't need me getting on my soap box, so sorry  !

Good luck! :D

I prefer to make mine from scratch too. For one gallon of base you would need approx. 1 oz. of fragrance. Some fragrances are pretty strong, so you might get away with using less. If you are scenting just a small portion, for 4 ozs. of base, you would need approx. 20 drops of fragrance.

What if its 8, 16 or 32oz? See I thought it had to do with the measurements of the other ingredients that's why I was so confused. Also, I didn't buy my fragrance oils from them, just the lotion base. I bought my fragrance oild elsewhere.

Thanks so much!

This is calculated at 1 oz. per 1 gallon (128 ozs.) of base. Since not all fragrances are the same strength, this is a rough calculation.

4 oz. 20 drops
8 ozs. 40 drops (1.85 ml.)
16 ozs. 81 drops (3.7 ml.)
32 ozs. 163 drops (7.39 ml.)

HTH.

Since each fragrance oil is different, and each company is different, it is best if you contact the place where you bought the FO and ask them what their recommended usage level is in lotions/creams. You can roughly estimate, but to get the safe number from the vendor is the best way to to do it. They will offer you a percentage (a lot are 3-6%) rate, then you can figure it from there. You will want to use the total ounces of your batch to calculate the percentage of FO to be put in. Start with the lowest percentage and then see if you want more or like it as is. You can always add in, but you can't take it out :D Going over is not recommended as it may cause skin irritation in your customers. Good luck! :D
