My first salt bars with 30% salt don't feel very exfoliating, I wish to increase the amount of salt content but I am afraid the bubbles will be diminished even further, these bars are not bubbly only creamy, I used 100% CO with 20% SF. I've heard some soapers use up to 80% salt but don't know if these bars produce bubbles at all. Any suggestions? thanks so much

Here is a recipe that MagicHands posted that I have used successfully:

12 oz. Coconut Oil
3 oz. Olive Oil
2.4 oz Lye
5 oz. Water
15 oz. Salt (added at light trace)

These bars give great lather, lots of bubbles and very creamy too. They do not have much exfoliation, they are just super creamy and bubbly.

Hope this helps.

The two recipes that I found on forums when I began both had 70% and 15% superfat ratios. I have stuck with this ratio as it gives a nice lather imho. It is cut at about 12 hours or it may be too hard. The salt and any other additives are added at light trace. I can't find the one, but I made notes that it was the same ratio. Here is the one from Millers site;

Coconut Oil 504 gr. 17.78 oz. 70%
Castor Oil 72 gr. 2.54 oz. 10%
Grapeseed Oil 144 gr. 5.08 oz. 20%
Distilled Water 237.6 gr. 8.38 oz.
Lye 102.15 gr. 3.6 oz.
Sea Salt - Fine 576 gr. 20.32 oz.

Good luck and Happy Soaping! :P

I don't know actually. Maybe using a coarser grain of salt? This is what I love about the salt bars, they feel like a slick rock, or like lotion, not scratchy at all. I do know not to use Dead Sea salt, it contains water and will weep, also, I've heard Epsom Salts will weep too. So, I just use Sea Salt from the local supermarket.

I use other stuff to exfoliate, like sugar scrubs or oatmeal or coffee grounds in my coffee soap.

If you add the salt as an add-in component, rather than melting it and adding it into the lye mix with your liquid, then it does not alter your numbers for your recipe. So you can use it as part of your liquid (at the same rate you are now) where it will make your bar harder, and then you can also add it into your soap as an additive, where it will not alter the hardness of your bar, but will be an exfoliating agent, just like when you add coffee grounds or herbs, etc.

When you said that the dead sea salts weeped, is that from personal knowledge or did you read that somewhere? I just read an article that offered a cp soap recipe for dead sea salts and it did not mention this possibility. While I have never dead sea salts in soap it is close to the top pf my "to try" list, so I am curious.

Dea sea salts will weep in CP soap due the the moisture that this salt naturally has.

Yes, it's pulling the moisture, it doesnt contain it. The dead sea salts actually contain several types of salts and minerals, and they may attract more moisture because of that, I am still trying to find a "why" for the reported weeping, but for now, this is all I can reason out. I still have yet to find it in writing, but I am searching.
