Barbara May, thanks for the info on making Castille soap. I love how folks on this forum are not afraid to experiment and try something new and different. I just had to try some last night. So far, so good. We'll see how it turns out. 8)

Hi Sandy,
You're welcome. I hope you find it as lovely on your skin as I do. I can't believe I didn't do this years ago..

Well where are the pictures Sandy? I am sure that it will turn out great, but that long wait is what kills! Guess you'll just have to make more to keep you occupied while you wait :D

Super Walmarts carry fresh goats milk. I freeze it in icecube containers, put in a ziplock bag and store in the freezer until needed.... just in case

Hi soapbabysoap, You should be able to keep the milk in the freezer for 3-6 months. Mine never lasts longer than it takes to make 3 batches of soap.
I always make a large batch of Castille soap with absolutely nothing else added. Pure is best.
Then I make occassionally a batch of Olive Oil soap with Cedarwood, and sometimes Lavender Essential oils, (as it's now mixed with other oils, it's no longer Castille soap).
Now that I love the Goat's Milk Castille soaps, I make several batches of that too, in preference to using EO.
I rarely use FO, it's just how I am    .

I am not a purist... I want to try it all (but only if it pertains to soap making). I have made a 90% olive oil soap, do not call it castille. Castille does not have fond memories - used to be what 'they' used to mix up for an enema! And I guess it is the same as calling all sweet onions vadialla... should not be done???? When I do make the olive oil soap I have not scented it as I will use it as a soap for my family and friends that have sensitive skin or can not tolerate scents.

Haha, I completely forgot about the castille soap enemas--so true! OK, I cut the soap last night--24 hours after making. When slicing, it's brittle, bottom chips off. Doesn't zap, shouldn't be lye heavy. Help me out, ladies (or gents).

Was the soap at room temp when you cut it? If I refrigerate mine and try to cut while cool it will do that.

Interesting. I wondered if it was because I used the minimum liquid recommendation. I used 24 oz. olive oil, 3.19 oz. lye, 6 oz. goat's milk (MMS calculator gives range of liquid as 6-9 oz.). Thanks for the tip.

So your water percentage was 25%. I went back to my notes on my adapted olive oil soap - I used 38%. Since then I mostly due 36% unless it is a difficult fragrance. My bars of olive oil soap did dry, took 6 weeks and yes they got better with time. I made them in August and currently using the last one.

I am making this today. My GM is in the freezer getting slushy. I just wish we didn't have to wait 4 weeks to try a new soap!!!! :x
