Hello! So, I have a feeling many more questions will arise as I am delving in. hahaha...

What type of scale do you all use to measure lye/ oils?? regular kitchen scale or some special type of scale?

Use a scale that measures at least to 0.1 of an oz. If you are making small batches, make them in grams instead for more accuracy.

I have both a little 1 lb. spring scale and a digital scale that does oz. and grams. Oddly, I've always gotten the most consistent results using the trusty little spring scale. O_o

But, yes, when you're making smaller batches, you want to be able to measure your lye in the finest increments possible. Not so important for a 5 lb. batch, very important for a 5 oz. test bar.

I find that the cheap digital postal scale that you can pick up anywhere is just fine for weighing out the ingredients. (Like Wal-Mart. I got mine when I signed up with stamps.com for free but I do small batches less than 8 lbs total.) You cannot be accurate enough to get a precise superfatting when the difference between 5% and 9% is sometimes less than .1 oz. If you are making 10 or more pounds them the less accurate scale does not make as much of a problem. As long as you round down it works pretty well.
