Teach Soap

I made a scrumptious soap several months ago by mixing Bramble Berry's Fresh Linen fragrance with their Lime fragrance. Everyone loved that combination. I did not gel that batch in the oven.

So last night I made a double batch and this time I put them in the oven at 170 degrees (that's the lowest my oven will go). I pulled both batches out of the oven this morning and sliced them, only to find there was very little, if any, fragrance left in the soap.

I got on the Bramble Berry site and saw that the Fresh Linen description says it is a "medium-flashpoint oil (152ºF)". So does that mean the fragrance will dissipate at 150 degrees? And does that mean that no fragrance with a flashpoint lower than 171 degrees should ever be put in the oven to gel?

It depends how much fragrance you used PPO (per lb. of oils).

A "Flashpoint of 150" means that it will volatilize with oxygen to form an explosive vapor at 150 F . No, you can put that in soap, then into your 170 F oven with no worries.

I'm with SB though, probably didn't use enough. I gel everything regardless of flashpoint and FO or EO and never had any problems with dissipating scents. Although my sense dissipates while doing some things.....which shall remain nameless.

I'm heavy handed with fragrance and usually use the maximum amount recommended by the Fragrance Calculator on the BB web site (I'm sure Anne-Marie and Bramble Berry will love to hear that), so it wasn't that I didn't use enough fragrance.

However, I just went in my guest room where I have my soaps curing, and it does seem like the Fresh Linen-scented soaps have more of a smell now than they did when I first cut them earlier this morning. So I'll keep my fingers crossed that they will turn out okay.

Just read this thread... No one can know how excited this state is! We have been celebrating for 4 days. And besides the injuries it was a very good game to watch.

Now back to soapmaking: Soapbuddy has said that non-gelling will help some fragrances come though better. This again leads to keeping good notes, sharing info and sometimes experimenting. I guess those small batches do serve a purpose. I'm going to get me some smaller molds tomorrow!
