I just got a bunch of Bramble Berry Fragrance Oils from a friend, but I don't have a clue if they need vanilla color stabilizer. Is there a list I can look up? Thanks!

Did you look at BrambleBerry's web site?

Hi, Want2bemore! I'd go to Bramble Berry's website and look up the fragrances. BB is good about noting any fragrance oil issues. If the description mentions that it turns soap a tan or brown color, it most likely contains vanilla and a vanilla color stabilizer can help keep discoloration to a minimum.

I haven't looked up each scent individually. So if it mentions that it has vanilla in the ingredients or if it will turn the soap a tan or brown color, I need vanilla stabilizer? There is 1 scent that was apparently a sample that I don't see listed on Bramble Berry. It's called Peachy Keen. Does anyone know anything about that one?

If you could list the fragrances that you got, members could help you better.

I was surprised to realize that I have not worked with any of these particular fragrances. I've used some similar ones, though.

I looked your FOs up and saw a couple that might benefit from a vanilla color stabilizer. The Island Coconut discolors brown, according to BB's description, so I would imagine it contains some vanilla notes. I noticed that the Cybilla "Almond" FO discolors soap "slightly." (Not sure if it discolors brown, but I could see vanilla being in an almond FO, so I'm assuming it discolors brown. BB's "Almond" did not mention any discoloration issues, but I'd probably test it out in a small batch just to be sure. The Cybilla fragrances are simply another line of FOs that BB carries.)

The Applejack Peel discolors to a slight yellow tint and the Strawberry discolors M&P with a light red tone, according to BB. Vanilla stabilizer won't help much, though, if it's not vanilla causing the discoloration (vanilla usually turns brown).

Again, I haven't worked with these, I'm just going by what BB says on their website.

The amount of discoloration depends on how much vanilla is in the FO. If it contains a small amount, it may go tan or beige. If it's heavy on the vanilla, you'll get dark brown discoloration. A stabilizer doesn't always totally keep the discoloration away, either. I've had some soaps discolor even with stabilizer, but the discoloration is not as dramatic or fast. It seems to depend on the stabilizer, too - some work better than others.

A lot of the FOs that smell like baked goods or sugary-sweet things contain vanilla, so I'm always suspicious of them. I've noticed, too, that sometimes citrusy FOs can take on a yellow, orange, or even peach/pink tint, depending on what's in it. Vanilla stabilizer won't help much there, though, since vanilla is not the culprit.

If you're ever in doubt, you can always do a small test bar. Watch it for a couple of weeks or so to see what it does. Even if you use a stabilizer, I would still suggest that you watch it for a while to make sure there are no surprises.

I hope that helps! You really do have to experiment to know for sure, but BB tests their fragrances and they are good about giving a heads-up on any issues. I have been surprised before, though, by fragrances that I did not think would cause an issue, so that happens sometimes.

You have some lovely fragrance oils there. Have fun with them! :)

Edited to add: If you haven't already seen Anne-Marie's SQTV episode about using vanilla color stabilizer, this will be helpful, too: http://www.youtube.com/user/soapqueentv ... -KjcS-L2Sg

I have used patch, cucumber, almond and plumeria and did not have a problem with discoloration. This was in CP soap. The plumeria did speed up trace for me.
