Teach Soap

I am attempting to make goat milk soap with fresh goats milk. Having never made this type of soap I am a little confused with some of the recipes I have seen.

So is the lye solution water/lye, and then you add your GM at trace?

Do you calculate your GM as part of your water? Meaning, do you have less water in the lye solution, and make up for it by adding GM later?

So your soap won't turn bright orange or the milk won't scorch, I use the least amount of water to dissolve the lye and add the milk at a light trace.

I do the same thing - and yes, I reduce my water by the amount of the GM I plan to add.

If you want to use all GM, I'd recommend freezing it into cubes and very slowly adding the lye, to keep the solution cool and avoid the scorching issue soapbuddy mentioned.

I taught a class on goatsmilk soapmaking at the national dairy goats association this year.

You can do 100% replacing of the water with goatsmilk or you could do a smaller % of goatsmilk.

Just remember, that the goatsmilk has natural fat in it so if you superfat too much, the fat in the milk adds to the superfat and you'll end up with a very moisturizing (but not so lathering) batch of soap.

I just freeze my goatsmilk until it's super slushy but not quite frozen and then slowly, slowly, slowly drizzle the lye in to heat the milk up (hopefully) cool enough to prevent scorching.
