Teach Soap

The hardware store close to me makes people sign a sheet they give to the police dept for anybody who buys lye. I refuse to buy anymore if they treat us like a common criminals because people use it to make meth so now the police investigate everyone who buys drain cleaner? The doughnut shop is a good place to start looking.

I live near Wilmington NC can anybody recommend a good place to buy lye? Thanks Celeste.

Dave is correct. We do stick together. We are what.....3 guys in here to my knowledge? love2dostuff & I are about 2 hours apart by car and the local hardware store has started doing the same thing so it may be a statewide ordinance. To purchase a 1 lb container of lye, you must give your name & address to the cashier and the stationary is from the county sheriff dept. All because some numbskulls (my idioms are getting pretty good huh?) use lye to make meth; all of a sudden it's a controlled substance. I write my name & sign as Peter Jaskanovitchemicanelutasovitz. Of course the spelling is going to vary each time..... Lyeguy is looking better. And Celeste....I think you should be soapbabe instead of soapchick.

I know it can be frustrating, but some of it is for the communities protection. If it would stop one meth lab I do not have a problem with that, but my guess is the "producers" will look to get their supply in larger quanities than the farm and fleet have in stock. Who knows next we will have to sign to buy fertilizer!

Agreed Bubbles. But I think some lawmakers have a "knee-jerk" reaction to writing laws that are meant to protect....and in the meantime our civil rights are slowing eroding. Same thing with Sudafed. I think it's outrageous to have to provide ID to purchase an over the counter medication. What's next? Because some goofy kids are eating a teaspoon of nutmeg to get a buzz, then in a year from now you won't be about to make pumpkin pies because there is a law against having more than 3 mg of nutmeg in your pantry? Common sense isn't so common anymore. Go Bears.

Here in Australia we can buy lye in the shops, but if we order it over the internet, it's not allowed to be shipped out - we have to pick it up from the supplier. Nothing to do with meth labs, just Australia Post safety precautions, I guess.
The local manufacturer of the lye sold as a drain cleaner even puts "Perfect for making soaps" on the label!

Now I am stupified, is that true about nutmeg? I try to keep up with some of the trends, to be watchful and I have not heard this one. Were you just making a pun? I am going to need to buy lye soon, I'll see what happens here. The central part of this nation is a little conservative and slower to react.

Yes, the nutmeg story is true, sad as it seems I buy my lye locally from a chemical store. The guys there told me once that they only ask for personal information from the "kids that look like they're up to no good" If I bring them a couple bars of soap, they even give me a discount on the lye.
It is sad though that we have to fill out a form for common items like lye and cold medicine.
