Hi there,
I made my first batch of soap today and enjoyed the experience. It's a very satisfying feeling.
I didn't add any additives but would like to add herbs like rosemary, lavender buds, callendula or things like that. I've heard they turn brown - does this always happen? Any way around that? If not, are there any herbs I can use that will not turn nasty? Any wisdom you can pass along is appreciated.
Thanks so much for your guidance.

Hi LaLa and welcome. Just about every botanical I've ever tried turns brown....mostly likely because of the lye. I like to use lavender buds in my lavender scented soap. Quick words of wisdom: Most botanicals will float when put in soap and some will float to the top if you pour before you're at a thick trace (which nobody likes to do). Here's a hint. Soak them in oil first for several hours to saturate them so they'll be less boyant (like my wife who swims like a lead cat). In general, all will turn brown unless somebody here knows a trick or two they'd like to share.

Did you all notice how easily my former teammates disposed of the "Seabirds" ? Thanks for your support.

Calendula will keep its color in soap.

Thanks to you both for your words of wisdom.

What do you recommend as when the herbs must be added (pre or post trace)?

Thanks so much.

I agree. Most herbs do turn brown, except for what Soapbuddy said--calendula. You can do the next best thing and use herbal infused oils as part of the oils for your soaps. Just make sure you strain the oils before adding them. Some herbs can be scratchy. That way, some of the best properties of the herbs are still a part of the formula. I have also put a thin layer of M&P on a bar of CP (cured), then sprinkled rose petals, or lavender buds which will give a pretty touch--until they turn brown! More of a temporary, fun touch.

If you rebatch the soap will you still have issues with the herbs turning brown?
