Teach Soap

I called around and finally found some LouAna Coconut Oil () at one of the grocery stores in my area. How is this stuff for soapmaking compared to the coconut oil that soapmaking suppliers usually sell?

I haven't picked it up at the store yet - will it have a melt temperature listed on it so I can run it through a calculator?

They have the same SAP value, so that part doesn't matter. I've bought this oil before and no it doesn't have a melt point on it, but because SAP values are the same, you can use either temp.
I've used this oil when waiting for my BB shipment and it works just fine in soap, lip balms, body butters, everything!

LouAnna brand is the same as coconut oil bought from soapmaking supply places. It just costs more.

Well that wasn't what I was going for (spending MORE money). So it's more expensive even with shipping factored in? If that turns out to be the case, I guess I'll just keep it in mind if I am ever completely out of coconut oil.

I have purchased it from Walmart when I was out of coocnut oil, but it is cheaper to buy bulk.

I got 4 batches of soap out of my can from walmart. so the cost wasn't too bad.

Lou Anna is good to keep in the back of your cabinet when you realize you're out of coconut oil and have already committed to making a batch. When I first started making soap, I couldn't envision going through an entire 5-gallon bucket of coconut oil. Then I couldn't envision going through a 55-gallon drum of coconut oil. Darn addictions are expensive. I need to find one that doesn't cost so much money. Maybe I'll take up needlepoint....

I havent found a good/cheap supplier of coconut oil in bulk yet. I can get 2lbs of the LouAnn at Kroger for 4.99$ and no shipping. Where are you getting yours?

I get 50 lbs. of Coconut Oil, 92 Degree for $70 plus shipping. So not including shipping, that's $1.40 per lb.

There's the rub... If someone would only be making 1-3 batches of soap per month (each batch using only 6-10 oz of coconut) the cost may come out very close. I will have to look at my invoices and do alittle math to see how this plays out.

I read that also about dormant trees. I believe soapmaking just got more expensive. I'm "seriously" starting to consider the needlepoint now.

Dave: I'm not up for another gender war in here. Celeste is still beating me up over the last one. If I take up needlepoint, you're the first person I'm inviting over to do a double cross hatch stich (or whaterver it's called). We could throw some dead animals on the grill, watch some football and knit a couple sweaters!!
