Teach Soap

The stick on my stick blender is turning dark. When I clean the stick blender after soapmaking, the dishcloth gets black from the blender. Is the lye be causing this? Could the stick part of my blender be made of aluminum?

Sounds like the metal part isn't stainless steel. I wouldn't use it again for soap.

I had a stick blender, that hard plastic, I always treated it gently and didn't even use it much.
The shaft got a hairline crack.
Then the lubricant inside the drive shaft got out thru the crack during use.
It was midrange in price.
I will go for steel next time.
It's always buyer beware, it seems.

Darn it!

Mine is a pricey one that I got years ago and rarely used. Considering the cost of all the other supplies I had to pick up to begin soapmaking, I was so happy that I didn't have to go out and buy a stick blender. Now I won't be able to use the old one for cooking OR soapmaking.

I got mine at WalMart for about $15. The brand is Hamilton Beach, works great and not too pricey. I've got well over 100 batches with it too, and it's standing up just fine.

I wonder if the one I have could be steel? I just assumed they would all be made of stainless steel but I guess not.

I'm ready to spring for a new stick blender since I don't want to use my old one if it might cause something harmful to be deposited into my soap. I want to get one that has a removable stem for easy cleaning. Most of the ones I'm seeing with a removable stem also have a stainless steel stem. I'm a little afraid to buy another one with any kind of a metal stem since I had this problem with my old one. I thought my old one was stainless steel but it was probably 10-13 years old. I rarely used it and then pulled it out for soapmaking and ran into this problem.

Does anyone know of a plastic stemmed-blender that also has a removable stem? Or am I just being too paranoid about buying another one with a stainless-steel stem . . .
