Teach Soap

I know DOS isn't pretty but does it mean the soap is bad? Can I still use it? What causes it? I made a patchouli soap last weekend & I think I may see some DOS starting. If I made a dark soap The DOS would not be obvious so.......

You can use it for yourself. After a while that soap will not smell good on your skin as the DOS starts to spread.

The batch that I have that has DOS was fine for a while, but now it smells very bad. I wouldn't even use in the laundry.

How do you know if DOS are starting to form? I just made a batch 3 days ago with Cherry Almond FO (BB) and coconut milk. I noticed last night that on a few of the pieces there are very tiny flecks of brown color on some pieces of the soap. They are only around the top, that I can see.

Most DOS looks like orange spots, not brown.

Hmmm they don't look like that. They are tiny like little brown freckles. Any idea what this could be?

Thanks! I was hoping that it wasn't dos or even possibly mold?? So they should be safe to use after they cure? I did use the coconut milk, and if it is caramelized milk with the spots get bigger or multiply? I wouldn't think that this makes any sense, but caramelizing never occurred to me.

On the BB sight the details for the Cherry Almond FO said that it can be tricky in cp. I'm not sure what to expect from tricky....

I have never seen mold on CP soaps. Coconut milk has natural sugars which can caramelize due to the soap geling. They shouldn't get bigger, as it's just specks of sugar. Tricky fragrances could be anything from accelerating trace, overheating, ricing or separating. It's a good idea to use full water and soap cool at around 100 - 110 degress (US) and use a whisk instead of a stick blender.
