I ran low on olive oil and replaced over half of the olive oil in my soap, with Canola oil. How good (or bad) is Canola oil in soap?

Thanks!

Canola is a very soft oil and can't be subbed for olive. You will end up with soap that's going to be soft for a very long time. I presume you recalculated your recipe with the canola?

Oh no . . . Crap! Well I guess this is another lesson in how I shouldn't believe everything I read on the internet. How long do you think it will take to harden?

I did run it through the calculator though.

Thanks!

When I ran it through the BB Lye Calculator it came out like this:

Canola Oil - 5.90oz 24.6%
Coconut Oil (76 Degrees) - 6.00oz 25.0%
Olive Oil - 6.10oz 25.4%
Palm Oil - 6.00oz 25.0%
7% Lye (Sodium Hydroxide) - 3.281oz
Ounces of liquid recommended - 7.92oz

24% of canola is pretty high. Put that soap away for a while and forget about it. Check it in about 2-3 months.

Will do. I hope it still has some fragrance left after that time! If not, I guess I'll have to count it as a lesson learned. I colored it green and used BB Sweetgrass fragrance oil and I liked the smell and color. I wonder what the finished consistency will be? I hope it doesn't give a slimy feel when used.

50% hard oils should make it pretty hard, would love to know your results.

I'll post the results - good or bad - as soon as I know how it turns out . . . which looks like it won't be for a couple of months!
