Teach Soap

I read the following on a soap blog:

It is best to cure your soap for a minimum of 4 weeks or longer if you're able. Store it in open air on a shelf for two weeks then you can put into cardboard boxes with holes after that. Putting them in the cardboard boxes after two weeks helps to keep the scent incorporated but also allow for air to circulate around your soap.

Is this common knowledge among soap makers? This is the first time I've heard it.

I don't think the cardboard boxes help with scent. I do cure my soaps for 4 to 6 weeks. Depending how full or busy my soaping racks are, I might put the 4 week old bars in a larger plastic tote with the lid that's not completely closed. If you start with a quality fragrance, you should have no problem with fading.

Soapbuddy, I was wondering if my soaps (with 2 different FO) that are curing pretty much side by side in my keeping room/pantry will absorb each others fragrances? I kind of suspected that they would...so I tried to use FO's that wouldn't smell horrible together, but I would prefer that each batch keep the fragrance I intended for them. Due to lack of curing space free from pets, this was my best option! Just curious...and any ideas would be most welcome!

Thanks...That's exactly what I hoped to hear!! My curing space is so limited, it's just frustrating...I really wanted to soap last weekend, but had no place to put any more soap...I've taken over more than half of the pantry as it is!
The good news is that my husband has promised that he will build me a "soap shack" if I'm still soap-crazy in August 2011...a wise man; as he well knows how I tend to be totally intrigued by something, only to get bored with it after I master it. Since soap-making is such a wily devil, I doubt that I will ever "master" it... so that soap-shack might get built after all, LOL!

I am in exactly the same situation as cerelife. I have very limited space where I can dry my soap and I was also wondering if they would absorb each other's fragrance. I'm going to need to figure out something soon as to how to get more drying space.

So, to be clear, drying soap in completely open air for 4-6 weeks will not cause the scent to start fading?
