I am reading Anne L. Watson's book 'Smart Soapmaking' and the book lists a roasting pan as one of the things I'll need to make CP soap. The books says the roasting pan is to be filled with ice and water so that I can set the saucepan of lye water into it to make it cool faster.

I am also watching Anne Marie's CP Soapmaking videos on YouTube. So far there is no mention in the videos of a roasting pan or ice water bath. Are those really needed? Or are they just a different way of doing what Anne Marie is doing?

Thanks,
Linda

The only time I've done that is when making goat's milk soap. Otherwise, the goat's milk turns brown from the heat of the lye, instead of a light yellow. Of course, if you want a browner color, like in a coffee goat's milk soap, it's not necessary.

If I want my lye to cool off fast, I dissolve the lye in minimum water required, then add the rest as ice cubes.

I put mine in a sink with cold water to cool it down. Sometimes I do like soapbuddy and add some ice cubes.
