Teach Soap

Where can I find pH Testing Strips? Since I will soon be attempting my very first try at making cold process soap, I was advised that it would be wise to test my soap for too much lye. But Bramble Berry doesn't seem to have them (unless I'm just not seeing them). Where else can I find them?

Never mind. Someone just told me that Bramble Berry does have testing strips so I have ordered some. Thanks anyway!

I would save your money and do the zap test instead. After your soap is made and cut, dampen your finger with some water. Touch that finger to the soap, then touch it to your tongue. If the soap is lye heavy it will zap. Kind of like licking a 9 volt battery.

Yikes! Who knew? Would the 'zap' be strong enough that a beginner would know she was zapped?

I tried the zap test on my newest batch and I didn't get zapped, but the soap had a metalic taste. Is that how it's supposed to be? It was similar to what store bought soap tastes like if it gets in your mouth.

Awesome! Thanks! I was trying to test using an aquarium pH kit but there are no numbers to show what the actual pH is. It goes by the color of the water tested.
