I have a soap recipe that calls for Palm Oil. I looked at my local Health Food Store and saw all kinds of oils but not Palm Oil. Do grocery stores carry it? I don't even know what it looks like.

Your health food store might carry shortening used for cooking and it's mostly palm oil.

You should be able to substitute rice bran oil. I use that instead of palm oil in cp soaps.

If you get PO, make sure it's from a sustainable source. If you get the stuff from the rain forests it takes away the orangatang (spelling?) food.

Hey Midnight Storm!! I was using Palm Oil but then found out it's not good for the orangatans (did I spell that right?)!! Now I use Castor Oil, Olive Oil and Coconut Oil and honestly don't notice any difference. It was hard for me to find Palm Oil w/out paying a lot for shipping, and you get all the other Oils I listed in the grocery store.

Columbus Foods/Soaper's Choice carries Palm oil that's sustainable. No orangutans were harmed for their oil.

I have been reading about the sustainable sources for Palm Oil so I definitely want to be environmentally conscious. As a new soap maker I just wasn't sure about substituting other oils in my very first attempts at soap making. I can't find coconut oil either so I guess I will need to order them online. I just hate to add the shipping expenses to my already-climbing costs to get started making soap.

You can find coconut oil in the oil aisle of walmart. It's like 10.00 for 14 ounces I believe. Shipping costs are soooo high that I mainly stick to melt and pour, I leave the CP and the HP for when I have extra money!! lol

Hmmmm . . . I looked today and didn't see coconut oil at my Walmart. What does it look like? Is it in a canister or a jar?

It's usually on the top shelf and I have bought it from a few Wally worlds. In a clear glass jar with a gold screw on lid and its about 10 for 14 oz. They have a bigger one but its like 23 dollars.

Whole Foods also carries both coconut oil and palm oil.

I use the LouAna coconut oil from Wal Mart. It's in a white container with a yellow label and costs around $5.

Thanks for your help everyone. As luck would have it, three hours after I place an order for palm oil and coconut oil online at Bramble Berry, I ran into a grocery store that I don't usually go to and I saw the LouAna Coconut Oil sitting right there on a shelf. I could have saved myself some hefty shippling charges had I come across it sooner. I still haven't come across the palm oil anywhere locally though.

Crisco has palm oil in it. The best batch I've made so far was with Crisco, olive oil and coconut oil.

Really? I will keep that in mind although I'm probably far too new to start trying substitutions yet. I haven't even made my first batch of CP yet. I'm still gathering all the materials and equipment. I'll probably be so afraid that I'll follow my first recipe EXACTLY so that I won't mess anything up. I had no idea that Crisco could be used to make soap!
