I read you have to use a preservative for natural soaps so I bought some germabenII which didn't come with directions. Nice. So does anyone know the rules of how much to use per lb of soap base?

It has to be added below 140°F and the usage rate is 0.3 - 1%. It is listed on your label as: Propylene Glycol (and) Diazolidinyl Urea (and) Methylparaben (and) Propylparaben.

Are we talking about MP soap? This is the first that I am reading that we need to add a preservative to it. So how do you add Optiphen? I really suck at the % thing. So if my overall base/ingredients is 32 ounces how much would I use? Sorry for being a DUH

Ummm Ok so I was told that for my M&P NATURAL soap base I have to use germaben II in it if I add herbs or food products such as pumpkin puree, oatmeal and honey and stuff like that. If not they can go rancid. Is this not true? I heard it from the company I buy my soap base from. Also...Im sorry but I dont get the % stuff either. lol Please tell me how much as in tsp or TBS to lbs of soap base. I think the lady said 1tsp to 2lbs soap base but I cant remember.

Thank you...although now im really freaking out about the germaben. I cant believe they didn't send directions with it if its that important. I only add oats, honey, dried herbs and juice from boiled herbs in my soaps. Do I still need the germaben? Oh Lord. Im so confused. I dont have a scale or anything like that to figure that kind of thing out. I was just using a small amount such as maybe half a tsp to 1lb of soap and it seems to be ok. I always sample it on myself before I sell to make sure its safe. I just didn't want to add to little amount. This is getting tricky. Darn. I liked it when I used the other soap base with all the chemicals much better but I dont want that stuff in my soaps so I cant use it. :(

Well I still dont have a scale but have it ordered. I have to make soap today and the only part I have to use germaben in will be the part that has chocolate chips. I do need some for that right? I will be using 1lb of shea butter soap base. PLEASE tell me about how much germaben to use for that. I have no clue. Would half a tsp be enough or to much? I just have to get this made today!! Where I bought it said 1tsp for 2lbs of soap base so would that be correct? Im afraid to listen to anyone because I get so many different answers but I cant wait any longer to make this soap because it HAS got to be sent out tomorrow.

I didn't know about the scale when I first started this. I was selling to friends and family and mostly that's still the case. I do have a few others who have heard about how nice my soaps are and they have placed orders. Now that I know how to label stuff correctly I will definitely be doing it right. I will have to switch from chocolate chips to something else with less ingredients. Maybe dark baking chocolate with no sugar or maybe coco.
