Hi, I forgot about BB FO calculator! I'm looking right now and see the option of lotion. I'm making body butter with a strong cocoa butter smell, website says .25% - 3%.
Do you think the lotion section of the calc is ok for body butter? I'm getting so confused about scenting things, I don't want to waste any product!

Edited: I wanted to add that I'm looking at another cal also, and doing an example for Lily of the Valley Fo.
BB says 2.22 ml for moderate scent - this other place says 0.9ml is moderate! That's a big differance :( I'm getting so confused.
I did do lily of the valley at 1.29 ml and think it's pretty good where it's at after 24 hours with the lid off. I also did it at 1.89ml and it was a little strong.
Is this because I bought the lily of the valley from somewhere else?
I bought 4 FO from BB and 8 from NewDirections.

Fragrance is relative since everyone's nose is different. Just as long as you follow IFRA recommendations you will be fine. I normally start with 0.5 oz. of fragrance per lb. of body butter. Cocoa butter has a strong smell, so scents like Vanilla or Amber go well with it.

that is the recommended usage rate the supplier would say then right?
This time since I have droppers , I'm starting at 1ml per 5 ounce of product.
I'm doing 4 ounce jars, but putting the rest in little sample containers.
How long do you let your body butter sit before final testing of the scent? And do you put the lids on or leave them off while they are setting up?
I left mine off for 24 hours then re tested. I'm pretty happy with most of them at 1.89 ml but now I have droppers, I want to use an even amount lol. Do you think there will be much differance between scents at 1.50ml and 1.89ml? I don't want to waste what I made already, I used 32 ounces for 8 scents. I want to go ahead and sell them, even though the next batch will have a little less scent (or maybe not, I can't imagine .39ml making THAT much difference)
Thanks for you help and sorry for all the questions!

hi, thanks! I meant were you using 1/2 ounce per pound of BB, which is about 3.5 ml per 4 ounces.
I did 1ml per 4 ounces last night, smell was good last night, but seems to have worn down some today.
Guess I will mix in 1.50 ml and try it. I mean .50ml more

Oops! I misunderstood you. I start with 0.5 ozs. per lb. of body butter. For the really light scents, I've gone as high as 1 oz. per lb. of butter.

How long do you wait to test it again? I did 1.5ml last night (this is per 4 ounce) and just checked one now and it's a little light (Berrywine)
I don't know how smelly people like to be lol. Personally I like it kinda strong so the smell stays on after you rub it in. I'm making each jar separately in a cup then putting it into it's jar. Then I put the lid on and wait almost 24 hours and get a little bit with a clean lollipop stick and test it on my arm. Do you think that's a good way to do it?
I'm getting impatient, I wish I could find the right amount soon!

You can test it as soon as the fragrance is thoroughly mixed in. Some fragrances are naturally light.

these smell "right" after I mix it in. But 20 hours later, they don't smell as strong :(
Maybe it's the base, since it's a lot of cocoa butter I guess maybe that is over powering the scent.
I'm getting frustrated and I just started! lol

I've read somewhere that if you use cocoa butter, it will eat up some of your scent. So it could be that.

hmm interesting! It is the 3rd ingredient listed, after water and emulsifying wax.
A couple scents seem to not need as much, they had a lot of cinnamon tones in them.
Sleigh ride, coffee cake, cider
A couple other seemed to need more, chocolate, lime, buttercream
lily of the valley was really strong but as since died down some.
right now I'm testing most at 2.5ml per 4 ounces. I wish they all used the same amount, it would be a lot easier lol

I've learned over the years to keep good notes. Every fragrance seems to have a nuance of it's own and requires different weight.
