Hi, all,

I'm making lotion this week for a friend, and was going to use a new kind of plastic bottle for packaging. However, I discovered (too late) that these bottles are not high heat-safe, so I can't boil them to sterilize them like I normally do. Is it safe to sterilize lotion bottles in a 5% bleach solution instead? If so, should I just dip them and air dry them, or should I rinse before drying? I ask because I'm concerned that rinsing would only re-introduce contamination. Thank you!

If the bottles are new, don't add anything to them; including bleach. You could be introducing germs and bacteria from the water. Use them as they are.

Thank you, soapbuddy. These bottles are new, never been used, but they came uncapped, so they have been exposed to air. Would that be clean enough? Thanks again!

Soapbuddy, don't you owe it to your followers when giving out info to make it clear that most of your answers are your OPINION not the rule. Brambleberry states in there HOW TO MAKE LOTION booklet that EVERYTHING must be cleaned in a 10% bleach and water solution including the bottles. :P

Most chemists are not schooled on microbiology/germs and epidemiology. Even so, I think blindly trusting the shipper or manufacturer of your new bottles is foolish. For example, those bottles could have been sitting in a box on a shelf for years. If I am that consumer, I want the bottle sterilized before product is put in. If heat would melt the plastic, then another system for sterilization should be used. I also don't want residual clorine in my skin products, so I think sticking with glass is the way to go. This is my opinion.

I don't blindly trust the manufacturer. If the containers are obviously dirty, they will be returned by me. Most of my containers are bought by the case. They are wrapped in plastic and in a box. Having them on the shelf for a couple of years doesn't make any difference to me, just as long as they are clean. Some of the cases I go down myself and pick up, so I can see how they are stored in their warehouse.

Unless you have a lab, product made in your kitchen can only be sanitized at best. I don't want any residual chlorine in any of my products either. I prefer PET plastic due to earthquakes. Less chance of my containers breaking while in storage.

Wow ...

This thread has taken a sudden nasty turn. Carolyn, I don't understand the hostility.

I think it is generally understood that folks that give advice on a forum are offering up their methods of doing things. You can either take the advice or leave it. And I am grateful that we have experienced people here that are willing to take the time to help others.

There is a debate about whether or not you should clean your bottles. I can understand why some people feel the need to do it and why others don't. Soapbuddy is not the first person to say that sanitizing bottles and containers are not necessary and could even do more harm than good. Check out this thread right here on this forum, and you'll see some agreement: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=423&hilit=sterilize+bottles+lotion. Also, another reputable supplier that I like very much specifically cautions against sanitizing bottles in their FAQs: http://www.elementsbathandbody.com/faq

Please, let's be nice here at this forum. We're all just trying to help each other out. Soapbuddy has not said anything to incur such wrath. It is fine to respectfully disagree with each other, but personal attacks are unwarranted and absolutely not cool.

Wow. I certainly wasn't hoping to have such a "lively" debate over this. Perhaps "to each her/his own" is best.

soapbuddy has big shoulders and she knows I can be evil,I quess over time I have questioned the advice she gives because I found some of her advice contradictory to the advice from the owners of this website,if you really care to you can look up past conversations she has had .

I don't always agree with the owners. I can say my say without being moderated unlike other forums, where sheep follow sheep and nothing else is allowed.
