Teach Soap

Hi! Still waiting on my BB order, so I'm using the time to play with soapcalc.net, LOL!
Sooo, does this sound like an OK recipe for a beginner based on the percentages?

2-lb batch at 10% superfat with an INS of 161

Olive Oil 39%
Coconut Oil 30%
Palm Oil 26%
Castor Oil 5%

I plan to use 1oz of BB Vanilla Vanilla for fragrance (I know I SHOULD start out without fragrance, but I just purely hate unscented anything!). And Soapbuddy, I think I've seen you advise adding fragrance to your melted oils, rather than at trace...so I'll try that. Please correct me if I'm wrong...I've read so much stuff, my head is spinning, LOL!

Any suggestions for changes?

Looks fine to me. Yes, I add my fragrance to the cooled off oils and mix them in well before I add the lye water. See how your skin does with 30% coconut oil. You are doing 10% superfat, so be aware that it might take longer for the soap to get hard.

Thanks, Soapbuddy!! I plan to wait the full 6 weeks to even try my soap! You know I'm going to look at it every day and want to try it, though, LOL! Being a newbie stinks...
I want a reasonably long lasting hard bar of soap that produces decent lather and makes my skin feel good. I took the basic recipe from "The Soapmaker's Companion" and ran it through soapcalc to get the percentages, then reduced the oils on a relatively equal basis to add castor oil at 5%. Do you think 30% coconut oil will be too drying...??
Thanks for the info on when you add your fragrance...without you I would have added it as soon as my solid oils had melted and been mixed with the liquid oils...I'm such a newbie, LOL!

I have been making soap for nearly a year now and still consider myself a newbie. I wonder when we give up the newbie status? (In my workplace newbie's are 3-5 years). I also have a feeling that no matter how long I have been making soap I will go 'visit' them in the basement to ck on them. I turn them just to have a reason to touch and smell them! Looking forward to hearing about your first batch!
