Teach Soap

I just made my first batch of CP soap. I followed the instructions exactly. But when I got to the part where I added the essential oil it got weird.

First let me say that I used:
20 oz. e3xtras virgin olive oil
16 oz. coconut oil
14 oz. palm oil
6 oz. coconut milk
2 oz orange essential oil
7 oz. lye
13 oz. water

I melted the solid oils (they were at about 150 degrees), added the liquid oils in a stainless pot. I mixed my water & lye then added the milk (also at about 150 degrees). The I added the lye solution to the oils and used a stick blender to mix it. I got to trace and started adding my essential oil. It was going just great till then. For some reason it looked like the oils were separating from the mixture. I kind of looked like oatmeal with tons of oil all around it. I didn't know what to do, so I just kept blending with the stick mixer till it kind of looked mixed again. I poured it into the mold and covered it up.

Did I totally mess this batch up?

Try mixing your EO's with your oils in the begenning, but at around 100 to 115 degrees. I learned that by doing this, you have more time to work with your mixture

P.S. With milk soaps, this is kinda normal. As long as it passes the zap test, you are ok. Just keep blending it into submission! lol Get out your whisk and go to town on it. Mixing the EO's in the beginning helps with the temperature difference, rather than mixing a different temperature oil at the end.

150 degrees is pretty hot. It's possible your soap mixture overheated. Also, I don't know if you know this or not, but regular orange oil will fade in soap. You need either an anchor like Patchouli, Litsea or Vetiver, or use Orange 5X or Orange 10X. Those are super concentrated.

'zap test' is where if you wet your finger and then rub it over one of the bars of soap then touch it to your tongue it should taste like soap, but if you get a zap like touching your tongue to a nine volt battery your soap is either lye heavy or may not have completed the soaponification process yet. Most of my batches take 48 hours, once in awhile 72 to pass the zap test. I don't really like the taste of soap but I want to be sure so I always test at 24 hours and then everyday after that until the zap is gone.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I did the zap test and the soap is fine. It didn't zap me, but I had to brush my teeth to get that nasty soap taste out of my mouth. That is some nasty tasting stuff. Thanks again for all the help!

I have been having trouble with seizing. After lots of reading I now dilute my lye in triple the amount of distilled water. For example if my recipe calls for 7 ounces of lye I dilute it in 21 ounces of water. I also combine oil and lye at about 95-100 degrees. Maybe that much water will take a little longer to harden but I never "release" any soap less than 6 weeks after it is made.
