Hello everyone!
I'm working on formulating a liquid shampoo that is easy on my curls. I was looking through Catherine Failor's book and she doesn't mention any additives like silk or hydrolyzed protein. If I were to add these do I sub some of my water for them? Can they even be added to liquid soap?

Thanks in advance! :D

Add the extra additives during the dilution stage. With that said, I can't use handmade liquid soap for my hair. It makes it dry and looks like straw.

Thanks Soapbuddy!
I actually tried some liquid soap on my hair and it got so squeaky clean and felt so dry afterwards! I thought it was just because the soap was high on
coconut oil. Thats why I wanted to make one with more curly hair friendly oils like olive oil and avocado. Maybe liquid soap is not a good idea for shampoo. :?

So far I haven't found any liquid handmade shampoo that works for my thin, baby fine, straight hair.

Do you think it would be possible to formulate a shampoo with out harsh surfacants that still foams? Shampoos with SLS really dry my hair out and the ones I have tried without hardly suds.

I use a solid shampoo bar that's made with synthetic surfactants, inluding SLsA which is milder than SLS.

Hi, JessyV,

I have found that using oils that are high in unsaponafiables (jojoba, avocado) helps to add extra moisture to liquid soap. I also find that my hair takes to soaps high in soft oils a lot better than it does with soaps high in hard/brittle oils. I have read that shampoos in the past were based in castor oil, so that might be worth looking into as a base for a shampoo (I'm looking to try it out myself, actually.) Also, if you have dry hair, you might find all the recipes in Catherine Failor's book to be way too drying because of the amount of excess lye her recipes have. You might have a better time at a 0% superfat instead.

Something else that might help when it comes to success with washing your hair with liquid soap is to make sure you don't have hard water. I had great success washing my hair with soap in the past (using a bar soap made with olive, canola, apricot kernel, sweet almond, jojoba, and avocado), but since we moved, the hard water has made it impossible to get a good result. Supposedly baking soda is supposed to help cut down on that effect, but whenever I use it, all it does is kill the lather and doesn't make my hair all that better. You can try adding a small amount to your hair after you wash; if nothing else, it does help to remove product build up. If not, a hard water filter might help. And surprisingly, a vinegar rinse does a good job of adding some manageability after using soap. To use it, add 2 tbsp to a cup of water, and use it to rinse your hair. Unfortunately, it will leave a bit of vinegar scent in your hair.

Hope this helps!

Hi Jessy,
I have extremely fine, thin hair. I just had to try a shampoo bar, but the results were not good. I did find a syndet bar that I really like. http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name ... _id=983571. I like it so much that I'd love to try my own somewhere down the road, and try various hydrolyzed proteins. I found another sight that has a lot of info. on hair and hair products. http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/p/hair-care.html. It does look like quite a list of new ingredients would be involved; but this may become my Winter project. Keep us posted on your progress. So many of us seem to be in the market for a special shampoo. (Not sure if I've actually posted or not - sorry, if this posts twice.)

Hi tealabubbly. I just made a small batch of liquid soap with olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, and castor oil @ 0% super fat. I left it dissolving overnight. Luckily we have soft water so hopefully this shampoo will work (fingers crossed). :) I have heard of people using baking soda instead of a shampoo to wash their hair-I'm going to add baking soda and vinegar to must try list! Thanks for the tips!

Hi scents! I found swift's site a couple days ago and wow! She has so much valuable information! I love it! I wanted to try one of her shampoo recipes but I didn't have
most of the ingredients required so I made a liquid soap instead. Thanks for the link- I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Would a 0% super fat be too harsh even if I use a neutralizer after dilution?
