I wasn't sure were to post this, cause it's not necessarily CP...

My mom has several horses, and one of them has a ... well it's supposed to be a white tail. It's quite yellow, and stained from rolling around everywhere.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tackled a recipe to do something similar to this. As in a soap, or cleansing recipe to remove stains from a white animal.

I suppose peroxide is safer than bleach.. maybe even vinegar though it could burn if he had wounds.
as far as CP soap.. I would guess one with heavy Coconut oil, and light on the emollients??!?

We have had many horses over the years, and honestly, the best way to get a white tail is to use a shampoo called Quick Silver. It is purple, and will stain your hands so wear plastic gloves, but does wonders. You can also add laundry bluing to shampoo and that works pretty well. For general purpose shampooing of a horse, Ivory dish detergent is good too.
I have used my natural soap on my horses too, but do not like to use in on manes and tails, probably for the same reason I do not like shampoo bars....just don't get the results I am after...

You can see my current show horse in my profile pic--she has a fair amt of white on her :)
Hope that helps!!
Susan

Looks like a nice horse. :)

Yeah, it's always a challenge. I read that some people use bleach... but that's kinda pushing it. I've heard of people using Oxyclean diluted. Some people said Oxyclean and ivory dish soap. Or the laundry blueing trick with the shampoo.

I've heard of Quick Silver before too... but I haven't ever seen it it any of my tack stores. Maybe I'll take a closer look. But there's a lot of things people say are good that I can never find, mostly cause of the Canada-US thing.

Of course it doesn't hurt to ask.

Thanks for the input. :)

I don't know if this will help but I used to lighten and color my own hair. My hair is dark blonde with a red base and sometimes the color would come out a bit brassy or get a little yellow over time. I also used a shampoo that was purple for the same reason mentioned above. So if you can't find what you are looking for formulated for horses... try a beauty supply for people.

I know they make such shampoos for older people with white/grey hair as well as those who bleach. It's been a long time so I can't recommend a brand but I'd be willing to bet someone at your local beauty supply can.
