I made my first two batches of facial lotion and feel slightly successful. One batch was a little thin and
is still separating, however my second batch was perfect and it was one I tried to 'fix' when I miscalculated the amounts of each oil to be used. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to
get the right consistency? Do you have to heat the oil phase with the cetearyl alcohol at 140 F for a certain time? Thanks in advance for your help.

What is your exact recipe? It's hard to troubleshoot without knowing the ingredients and the %. Cetearyl alcohol should be melted with your oil phase. Melt it just long enough so everything melts and it's a liquid. You do need to heat and hold your water phase.

My recipe is 70% water, 25% oils, 5% cetearyl alcohol and 1% Optiphen for 101%. I found this recipe
online. I did heat the oils with the Cetearyl alcohol and kept the temp. below 140F. The water I did not monitor the temperature as well. Do I heat the water up with the preservative to the same temperature?

Your lotion is thin or separates because you need an emulsifier like e-wax. If you don't have any hard to preserve ingredients I would use the Phenonip at 0.7% instead of 1%. Do not add your preservative to the water while you are heating it. It needs to go in separately. Your oil phase and your water phase need to be at about the same temp to properly emulsify. I would lower your water to 66% and add the e-wax at 3%, so your formula comes out to 100%
