You're right. I stand corrected. It is < 7pH. It's been a while since I've done any testing with it. I did find this on bathbodysupply.com
"Exposure of Tinosan® SDC or Tinosan® SDC-containing formulations to light should be avoided and the product should preferably be stored in containers that provide protection against light. Final formulations should be tested for light stability in case they are sold in transparent packaging".

Tinosan SDC is a natural preservative which is based on silver ions stabilized using citric acid. While silver metal is inert and makes fine jewelry, silver ions are very toxic to many organisms including microbes and fish. The problem with earlier silver based preservatives was instability, but Tinosan SDC is stable when used correctly. Tinosan SDC should be maintained in the pH 4 to 6 range and protected from oxidizing agents. Conditions outside the expected range can result in slow loss of activity and color shift. The proper use rate is from 0.1 to 0.3 %. Tinosan SDC must be added only after the correct pH conditions are established to ensure complete activity.

Ciba recommends adjustment of the pH to around 5 before finalizing a batch made with the Tinosan SDC. Ciba suggests using 10 % sodium hydroxide in water for this purpose. pH testing and care is required to ensure good results with this method. Fortunately an easier approach exists. A very simple buffer system which will hold the pH in the correct range which is commonly used is available. Because buffers are self adjusting, no complicated pH adjustment is required. They also compensate for pH changes and improve stability of the product. Hydrovance combined with triethyl citrate (Citroflex 2) remains stable within the correct pH range over long term testing and will help stabilize Tinosan SDC.
Add at least 1% Hydrovance and 0.5 % Citroflex 2 to the batch water prior to adding Tinosan SDC. Use 2 tsp Hydrovance and 1 tsp Citroflex 2 per 12 oz. of product mixed into the batch water. Add 1/8 to ¼ tsp of Tinosan to this water mixture as the final step before proceeding with the batch.

Conditions to avoid

Tinosan SDC is compatible with most ingredient and formulations, but there are some conditions to avoid.

Tinosan SDC should not be used above pH 7. Tinosan SDC is specifically not compatible with SLS, SLES, natural soaps, and borax / beeswax lotions. Avoid temperatures above 122 °F or 50 °C. You may need to add Tinosan SDC as the product is cooling in some recipes.

Tinosan SDC containing products should not be exposed to light. Light exposure will affect the silver just like photographic film and reduce its ability to act as a preservative. Tinosan SDC preserved products should be packed in opaque or light absorbing (amber or cobalt glass) containers. Stability testing is required if clear containers are used particularly for clear liquids

This preservative seems to be not the best and certainly not the most dependable choice. To many variables for me. Snowdrift farm has a few preservatives that are geared toward more NATURAL ingredients. In this case I would say that your choice of preservative contibuted to the batch going bad .However this type of problem should not be left up to opinions, this is a serious issue and I feel you should submit your full recipe to the place where you bought the preservative and really find out what happened. You owe it to yourself to find out and prevent this from happening again.

Thank you for this information. It is important for newbies to know this. Not to mention some not so newbies to be reminded :)

I do not make lotion to sell, but I do buy it from another soaper. She has had some batches go bad every now and then. I know because I have had the bottles of lotion from her that went bad within 2-3 days after I purchased them from her and she has been in business for over 15 years.

What about trying Geogard Ultra? Geogard Ultra is accepted by ECOCERT as a preservative in certified organic cosmetics. It's considered a natural preservative that is a combination of a naturally occuring food additive glucono delta lactone, derived from corn, and a food grade preservative sodium benzoate, the sodium salt of benzoic acid, along with a trace amount of calcium gluconate as a processing agent.
