Teach Soap

I finally made my 1st batch of CP soap. It's been 15 hours and when I checked on the soap, It's very dry on top. Is it supposed to be like that? Also, I tried to do the swirl thing; what I did was, after I noticed the trace; I mixed some ultramarine blue with some of the soap, stirred it, then added that mixture to the mold and then swirled it w/ a spoon handle. When I ran my fingers along the top of the soap, blue powder was smeared on my fingers. Is this normal, and if not, what did I do wrong? When was I supposed to add the color and is this batch ruined? Thank you!!

After 15 hours, your soap should still be a bit soft, though harder on top than on the bottom. Perhaps some soda ash formed on the top? That can be fixed by placing saran wrap over the top of your soap after it is poured into the mold.
As for your mica, did you blend it with oil first or did you just pour the mica powder into the soap? You should blend your mica with a small amount of oil and then add it at light trace. I use a milk frother to blend my mica with oil so that there aren't any mica clumps.

You know the process does take a while to understand. When I started quite some time ago I went with the way of no color for a batch or two and see how your recipe works and responds and then start fooling with colors. The less variables from the beginning the better so you can know at all times where you are in the process. Good luck and happy soaping!

Your soap needs to be at a thin trace, so you can take out for the colored portion and stir, stir, stir. Sounds like you didn't incorporate all of the blue into it. That powder could stain your washcloth or you.
