Ok, now that I have made a couple of batches that have come out really good.... I'm curious how to price my lotions. What is the best way? I'm not retail selling these (not yet anyway) but my friends and family have already tried and are willing to start paying. Also, do I need to get my lotion tested or not until I go retail (whenever that will be)? Any and all help is truely appreciated!

I have read about the insurance and plan on calling them and I remember seeing the testing info, but it didn't have a website attached, so thank you for that info.

I asked my hubby about pricing and he told me that I should add up how much my products cost (including the jars) and then divide by 4 (my recipe made 4 8 oz jars). That should give me an idea of how much I should charge for the lotions. Is that right or is there another way?

You need to add your labor cost to the cost of the ingredients. Don't forget to add shipping costs too. Don't underprice yourself. If you charge too little, it's harder to up your prices at a later date.

I was looking online at other lotions, mainly just the name brand ones, and some don't charge a whole lot for their big bottles. Now I do understand that it is mass produced, so they can make it cheaper but if I did my numbers correctly I will be charging a lot more. This is my first business adventure so I'm nervous about figuring out what to do. Thank goodness for this forum!! I'll keep on looking at other sites to get an idea of what all natural lotions are going for and I'll keep y'all posted on my progress.

I've been looking online at other sites that sell natural lotions and I'm curious about something. When I read their ingredients, usually they say that they use hydrosols or green tea...not water. So if they use that, does that mean they don't need to use a preservative?

That is what I thought, but I just wanted to make sure I'm thinking the correct thing. Now their preservative could be a name that I don't know, but when reading the list it looked like everything they DID list was some type of either essential oil or carrier oil as well as the water based product....and that's it.

Don't forget to weigh everything and get your self a quality scale; one in ozs. and lbs. and one that weighs tiny amounts like 0.000 gm. since preservatives are used in very small amounts.
