Teach Soap

Okay so I'm new at this, but have successfully made a few 2lb logs of CP soap. I bought some new fragrance oils, which I love, but the flashpoint on the bottle says <200 degrees Farenheit.

So here's my question, because after reading about flashpoints, now I'm totally confused. Does that mean I should be adding the FO at less than 200 degrees (assuming I've already incorported oils/fats/lye). Or does that mean I need to start soaping at temperatures higher than 200 degrees.

My FOs that have flashpoints of 121-130 degress soap very well when the oils/fats/lye are around 115-120 degrees. When I did the same thing with the <200 degree FO it totally collapsed & looked like very watery oatmeal. All the oils popped up to the top of the mold as well. Pretty gross!

I'm just keep wasting expensive FOs, so if someone could help this beginner that would be great! Thanks

Flashpoints are mostly for candles. I wouldn't worry about a fragrance with a FP of 200 degrees, unless it's not soap safe. Some FO's are for candles only. If the fragrance oil did not incorporate into the raw soap batch, it's possible that it's not soap safe. Did the vendor where you bought it from have any info on this FO?

Hi there, thanks for responding. All the FO's I bought were sold as bath & body safe, so I'm assuming they're okay for soap. I just finished a 2lb batch with one of the FO's that said <200 flashpoint. I incorporated the lye with the oils/fats at about 100 degrees or so, got it to light trace & added the FO very slowly & guess what it worked beautifully!!!!

I think I may have soaped too hot & added the FO when it was too hot, which ended up in a oatmeal like slop of a mess the last time. I guess some of this is trial & error I've read so many tutorials etc. my head is spinning! Thanks for letting me know that flashpoints mostly deal with candles, I didn't know that, but I guess it makes sense! Have a wonderful weekend, I'm off to more soaping!!

I'm glad to hear that it worked for you. I normally soap at around 110 degrees and add my fragrance to the cooled off oils before I add the lye water. This doesn't always work with some fussy floral fragrances.
