Teach Soap

I need to purchase lye for cold process soap. I have rendered my beef suet, etc and have read on the web that Red Devil Lye is off the market. There is a brand called Pure Lye. Does anyone know if this is what we should use now or is there something else I need. This is my first time making cold processed soap!!! I am so excited.

I don't know about that brand, but when I have needed lye and can't wait for an order I got o my local ACE hardware store and ask them for the drain cleaners (which they keep hidden in the back) and look for one that is 100% lye. I even open the containers to make sure that there aren't any blue specks or anything like that which would mean it's not 100% lye.

Home Depot hasn't had any 100% lye drain cleansers that I have found.

I buy mine in bulk, but I believe Roebic is pure lye if you can find it locally. Just check the container. It should say 100% pure lye.

Pure Lye if it is the brand sold at many truevalue stores is fine for soap making. The bottle says 99.9 precent pure lye if I recall. I have used it with good result. You should be fine as long as the ingredients list 99+ % lye or sodium hydroxide.

I was a few plane flights away from home and wanted to make soap. Well I went to a hardware store and bought rooto 100 lye. The coconut soap is still curing, but I can tell it is a lovely bar! If I hadn't done this myself I would have been leery of the product, but am ok with it now.

I have some of the pellets that I got from AAA and the static makes them jump all over the place. I've heard putting a marshmallow inside of the container helps with that though.

What is the difference between lye and lye crystals soaping wise? I've seen both listed in recipes and around me all I can find is lye crystals.
