i would like to add some butters to my bought M&P soap base, what is the best % ratio for this? I would like to add cocoa butter

Hi Goddess -

Percentage wise I'm not sure but generally I put 1 tspn of my choice of butter to 1 pound of melt and pour. More than that would decrease my lather.

When experimenting with a new base and additives, I usually start with 1 Tbsp of butter. From the first test batch I either increase or decrease the butters. You'd be surprised how much butters your base will take. You can also boost lather with the addition of liquid soap, shaving soap, etc.

Melt and Pour is really made to be used 'as is' so the less you add the better it will perform. However, in our tests we found that it can hold 1 TBS of total added butters/oils per pound of MP soap and still work pretty well. Any more than this and the soap gets soft and loses lather.

thanks, the reason i asked is because i usually buy a Cocoa Butter M & P base, but i was wondering if it would just be easier to make my own, as in, buy the standard M&P and add my own butters...

i can buy the normal m&p at a few places but i only know of one place in Oz where i can get the cocoa butter M&P and they wont have any for about 2 months apparently

I see! You can always play around with different amounts and see what you like best!
If it was me though, I would buy the base that has the cocoa butter already added. (When they get it back in stock of course!)
