I am going to try my first batch this weekend using the beginners 4.5 pound recipe from the Teach Soap recipe page. Does anyone here have any experience with that recipe?
I'm not sure about the canola oil.
I also plan to use BB Oatmeal, Milk, & Honey fragrance oil, but don't know how much to use in a batch like this. Any general rules to follow?
Beginner 4.5 pound Soap Recipe - makes just under 4.5 lbs of soap
16oz Canola Oil
16oz Coconut Oil
16oz Palm Oil
6.9oz Lye (5% superfatted)
15.8oz Water

That's a pretty big recipe for a beginner. I would recalculate it for either 2 lbs., or do 1 lb. and recalculate in grams. If you need a recipe calculator, I would use The Sage lye calculator. http://www.thesage.com/calcs/lyecalc2.php
As far as the fragrance, start out with 0.5 oz. per lb. of soap and see how you like it.
I don't use Canola as I have had problems with it.

Thanks soapbuddy, I'll try to come up with something other than canola oil then. I will let you know how it goes.

You're welcome. Do you have olive oil or rice bran oil?

I can get olive oil - if the stuff at Sam's Club works.

Did my first batch this past week-end, got it cut today and I think it came out O.K.
I did use the olive oil in place of the canola oil and did a smaller batch.
I would like to know what everyone does to keep the static out of the lye - it flew all over the place! :x
After I got done cutting the bars, my wife cleared a shelf in her craft room for them to cure on, so it should smell good in there for the next month and a half.
Thanks again soapbuddy for the advice, I'll let you know how my next batch turns out.

Yes welcome to the addiction, and I for one can vouch for the kindness and generosity of the people on this forum! Nice batch you have there! Don't have an answer for you flyaway lye question sorry.

Rub your container and any scoops you use for lye with a fabric softener sheet. That should cut down on the static.

For a first timer those look very nice. It took me 3 batches before I got something OK. 4th was better and the 5th I'm finally happy with so your way ahead of the curve. Congratulations !!!!!!!!

Update - I continue to experiment with my soap, I usually do a batch a week, and my wife is actually enjoying helping with designing labels, packaging, etc. She also likes to think of names for the soap based on the scent.
The batch I did today is going to be called either "Carcass" or "Migraine". :|

Wow! What a great first batch you made. They're so uniform and pretty. (I missed this thread in January. I don't think I was on the forum much.)

My vote is for Migraine for your most recent batch. I've had a couple like that lately.
