I've never had DOS on my soaps before so I'm not entirely sure that's what's happened here. A soap batch that I made a couple of weeks ago now has about 1/2 the bars showing a few orangeish looking spots on them, but no icky smells to them. My question is, if it is DOS, is it safe to use these bars? And if it is not DOS, what else can cause orange spots to appear on soap?
My recipe was 40% lard, 30% coconut oil, and 30% soy oil. I superfated at 5% and did the water at I believe 35%, maybe 38%. No fragrance, color or other additives. Oh and it was a 12lb batch made in a log mold if that helps. And I have used this same recipe doxens of times and never had this problem b4. I've checked bars from this recipe that were made months ago and none show any signs of these orange spots on them.
Any ideas here? Suggestions? TIA, all help is appreciated.

If it showed up within a couple weeks, and there are OTHER batches with the same oils used, with no signs of DOS...I kinda wonder if it's from a fragrance you used? Like a browning vanilla or something like strawberry or orange that are not exactly clear, that didn't get incorporated properly.

As for "is it safe"...I have heard DOS soap is OK to use, just cut off the DOS and use. I wouldn't sell it. Eventually the DOS smell will be too strong to use it.

As I said, no fragrance or additives were used, so it can't be the fragrance causing it.
Also I checked those bars that were effected and the spots are only showing on the top in the bars that also got ashy. It's weird that the spots are only on the very top and only on the bars with a very thin layer of ash?
I only use fresh oils so I'm sure the oils weren't bad. This has really got me stumped.

It's possible that what was sold to you as fresh, sat in a warehouse somewhere for a while. I would cut the spots out and only use it for yourself.

I'm sure they were fresh, I get them from BB. Unless it was the lard, but I render that myself and it's never caused a problem

Are these bars ok to use to grind up and make laundry soap?

The spots haven't multiplied and they appeared within a couple days of unmolding so not sure it's DOS or just something weird?

I had my first battle with those nasty spots this past summer. I got caught in the rain at a craft show once and just a few bars got a little wet. They all got spots. I have heard that changes in the water you use can cause it as well. I have switched to distilled water for ALL my soaps now. Changes in humidity can affect them as well. I have never had one with spots ever have any bad smell to it. I did try one for myself once just to see how it was and I could not tell anything different.
