Hi! Sorry if I didn't respond sooner to all your questions - I worked Sunday night, didn't get home until past 10 Monday morning and was dead to the world until an hour ago.

I'm sorry that my recipe didn't work for you, Rhonda. And thank you for filling in for me answering questions, Jo! Okay, to answer everyone's questions. After trying out my (final) recipe at least 5 times before I shared with you all, there are several possible reasons I can think of why your soap didn't set up like mine, Rhonda. One is the salt like suggested by Jo. I tried using dead sea salt this morning and it was more oily and softer than even a plain M&P bar, I guess because of the potassium content of dead sea salts and dead sea salts just seem oilier somehow. I haven't tried epsom salts so can't say what a bar using it would be like. I tried sea salt and kosher salt and got the same milkshake consistency as with table salt, although the resulting bar was softer for the kosher salt. The other thing is, did you mix in the salt while the soap and bath butter mix was still hot? I should have mentioned in my original post that you want to wait until you can comfortably dip a finger in the mixture or hold the side of the container you have the mix in, otherwise your salt will melt and will take longer to set up or just remain soft overall. A possible solution to this would be to remelt your bars until semiliquid, then adding more salt. I can't say exactly how much salt you would need though, as it depends on the type of salt you used. If you can, keep adding salt (maybe 2-4 oz depending on the recipe size you used?) to the semiliquid mix and keep stirring gently until the resulting mix is the consistency of a thick milkshake and the salt is thoroughly dispersed throughout. The resulting new bars (hopefully) should be harder or set up better. The other possible factor is the soap base. Like I mentioned in my original post, I used BB's like-CP soap. If you used regular white soap base or shea soap base, then the glycerin content in the regular base and the shea butter in the second base might affect the results. To counterset this, you can try using only 3/4 the amount of foaming bath butter (3oz or 12oz depending on the recipe size you used) and replacing with the same amount soap base (5oz or 20oz depending on the recipe size you used) although I can't guarantee the results as I'm not able to try it out myself since I don't typically buy either base. I always use BB's like-CP bases in clear and white because of the humidity here in Hawaii or BB's shaving and goatsmilk bases, although I haven't tried making a goatsmilk salt bar because I ran out of goatsmilk base.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you still have problems, or if this solves the softness issue. :)

Thanks for your replies Curly and Armi.. I will post pics and let everyone know what happens with the Epsom salt (2nd) batch.. I did cut it and hope that it will harden to the point of not being sticky. The first batch with dead sea salt is definitely a tub scrub for now..lol.. I do think that most of the dead sea salt melted in the soap as I stirred. I didn't wait for the soap to cool much before adding it. And I did find it stiff at first and then as I stirred it got thinner and easier to stir so I know the salt melted. But it wasn't hot hot as I could dip my finger into it. But maybe I should have waited longer. I will try it again with the table salt and let everyone know.

Rhonda

Here's a picture of my M&P salt bars:
Image
M&P salt bars 3 ways - top one in seamoss scent in pour method (noticed how it looks dribbled on? that's how thick the mix gets), bottom right hand bar in tropical vacation scent with frosted top, and bottom left bar in island coconut with swirled top.
Image
Also did a salt bar in Moonlight Pomegranate in lavender. Yum! They aren't very visible in the background, but also did a pink 3D orb in lychee and flat bar in kumquat. To make the 3D orb, I poured into each half of the mold, spritzed with alcohol, then fitted the mold together and let it set using rubber bands. To make the surface of the bar flat, I covered it with a piece of wax paper and pressed it smooth/flat.

Hi Armi, they look fantastic!!

I love the colours in them and I think to be able to do the orb you must have worked really fast! LOL

They look really wonderful. Congratulations they are a huge achievement and you must be thrilled. I will have to go and try the tops like that now and see how I go.

Tell me with the flashpoint issue and the fragrance oils, I havent tried seamoss. Does it have a salt/sea smell? I know it says sea but well I thought I would ask anyway. I would really like a good fragrance for these salt bars that makes you think ocean and sea etc. Can you let me know and what did you use to colour them? I love the colour.

Congratulations again, a great achievement. They look great and I bet they smell fabulous too.
:D

Hi Armi and everyone,
You're probably at work Armi but, I had an attempt at swirls. It was interesting as I had something that made me think of Rhonda as I was making it. I had added 3/4 of the salt and I didnt have the mashed potato consistency that I needed. Interestingly I went to get more salt and the soap started to slowly set up. It made me think the m&p was as you said before too hot and the salt had melted. Anyway whilst I had the time!!!! I added some blue and I have ended up with a cloud effect rather than swirls!

So here are the clouds (F.O. Yuzu) - of course some dont look great but, well I think they will be just fine for my shower

I am sure between all of us here someone will come up with the swirls and the cp top. It all happened too fast for me to get a top on it. I had added more salt thinking it wouldnt set up and then it set in the bowl

Next time I will try adding it into the mold when it is more runny and hopefully I can get the swirl and the top.

In the meantime I will enjoy the mistakes myself!

Have a great night
Jo
