Teach Soap

Hi All.

I made some CP soap a little over a month ago. I cured it for 30 days. My husband and I used the soap. Lathered great, a little soft, but okay. I had no problem with the soap but my husband got very dry, itchy skin after using. It wasn't all over his body, just in areas that overlap (underarms, upper leg areas). Normally, I have dry, sensitive skin and my husband has normal to patchy dry skin.

Here was my recipe:

Coconut Oil - 7.5 oz - 27.7%
Olive Oil - 9 oz - 33.3%
Palm Oil - 7 oz - 25.9%
Hemp Oil - 2 oz - 7.4%
Castor - 1.5oz - 5.5%
Distilled Water - 10.2 oz
Lye - 3.80 oz

Spellbound Woods fragrance – 1 oz
Colors: Green Chrome Oxide – 1.5 cc scoop and Brown Oxide 2.5 cc scoop.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what can be bothering him? He is able to use SFIC M&P base with no problem (Olive, Hemp, Shea, Low Sweat White). He’s used other fragrances (Kentish Rain, Soapy Clean, Energy) also with no problem. We've used some other oxides (same green & some titanium dioxide in M&P) with no issue.

I’m wondering if it was the combo of Coconut & Palm, could it be drying on his skin? But the biggest puzzle is I’m not bothered by it and my skin reacts with everything!

Curing for 30 days really isn't enough. I would give it 6 to 8 weeks. It could also be the high amount of coconut. I don't go over 20% in my recipe. Or possibly the fragrance. How much did you superfat?

Superfat was 5%.

Would you recommend curing all batches for 6-8 weeks , or just this particular recipe?

I normally superfat at 7-8%. This is important, especially if you are making small batches and a gram too much can make a difference. Any batch should be cured for a bare minimum of 4 weeks. If you can wait 6 weeks, that's better.

I used your recommendation on the gentle face soap & made 100% olive oil with between 7-8% superfat yesterday.

MW - If you're using Spellbound Woods FO from BrambleBerry, I would suggest leaving out the colorant. The soap will turn brown naturally with Spellbound Woods. (Just one less thing to put in the soap)
