I am prepping for my first sales at my inlaws flea market in a few weeks. Nothing major and if I'm not ready it isn't a big deal, but it's my goal.

SO, I'm really good at pushing the less-fun aspects of any project to the side and am now trying to figure those things out! I was doing some research on ingredient listing and I'm finding a lot that contradicts other places I've looked. I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of a good website that can help me out!

I don't know if CP soap labeling is easier or not, but my biggest confusion is how to label the ingredients for the soap base. For instance, using the BB honey mp soap base, I think just listing Honey Soap Base is incorrect.

Also, when it comes to the FO, there aren't ingredients on the bottle, so do you just list it as being the FO or do you have to somehow find out what is in it?

THANKS!

For MP base, your vendor should give you an actual ingredient list, like BrambleBerry. It's listed right on their web site.
If it's a fragrance, that's how you list it "fragrance". I seriously doubt you would find the actual ingredients for your fragrance. Fragrance houses guard their formulas very carefully.

For some reason I was expecting the ingredients to be on the package and forgot they were on the actual website listing! Do I need to put the explanations as well? i.e. "Sodium Hydroxide (saponifying agent)" or just Sodium Hydroxide?

Thanks for pointing me there and also for the FO info.

Now, I read that you're supposed to list ingredients based on highest percentage first (though, that may have been more specific to items regulated by the FDA) or because this is "just" soap is it just necessary to only list the ingredients in any order?

I include everything ie: "Sodium Hydroxide (saponifying agent)" in the order that's listed. I list the fragrance last.

Revisiting this topic again! I have a soap that has three bases in it. When listing the ingredients are you meant to simply list the ingredients for each base or do you just list the unique items. How about listing for colorants (oxides in this case)?

That's what I was thinking. Do you list colorants? I used oxides.

I'm working on my ingredient labels and hoping that you all could give me some input. I want to be clear that I am working this up correctly. I list the ingredients as listed on the BB website for the base, then list the INCI: for each colorant I've used, and then fragrance?

For example:
Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Safflower Oil, Glycerine (kosher, of vegetable origin), Purified Water, Sodium Hydroxide (saponifying agent), Sorbitol (moisturizer), Sorbitan oleate (emulsifer), Soy bean protein (conditioner), ferric ferrocyanide, carmine, tin oxide, Yellow 5 Lake, Hydrogenated Polybutene, Mica, Palmitic Acid, fragrance

Am I on the right track with this or have I missed something?

Good job on your label one suggestion and consolidation that I would do (doesn't mean it is correct!), instead of listing each item used for color, I would just say colorants. From bar to bar of the same recipe then you would need to go thru the colors individually instead of Colorants. An exception to this in my mind is clays, I would list clay if it was used for color simply because it offers other benefits (benefits to be drawn by the purchaser no need to spell it out unless you want to).

Quoting you-

I don't think you can just say "colorants", unless it's mica. Since you are listing all the other ingredients, you need to list the actual name for the color ie: FD&C Blue #1.

I'm confused again now! It is my understanding that you use the INCI: listed for each individual product which is what I did on the example above using clear soap base, amethyst mica, yellow mica and fragrance. Is this correct?

soapbuddy, I wanted to say thank you for answering all my questions! I appreciate you taking the time to do this!
