Hi. I have some questions about superfatting when you add the extra oils at trace. First, are these oils that are added later get figured into the lye calculation? Or is that the point of it...to have extra added in beyond what gets calculated? Also, if you add the extras in at trace, should I set my actual calculation at a lower superfat % as it will be made up when I put them in later?

I have been trying various CP soaps and just can't find one that I like that does not leave me feeling dry. Is it possible to have a hard, nice lathering bar that will get my hands clean but leave me feeling like I am already wearing lotion??

There is no need to add your superfatting oils at trace. The lye is still active at this point and it will take whatever it wants. Always figure out all your oils/butters for your recipe, then do a lye discount; also called superfat. Try superfatting at 7% or so and see if that makes a difference for you.

Is your GM fresh, canned or powdered? If you read in the arcives of this forum you'll find alot of discussion on adding all the forms of GM to CP. Also David Fisher @about.com has some good articals about it too. Good luck

I wondered the same things that Mel asked, and I'm still confused. Going back to the original question, if I want to add additional oil at trace, say almond oil, do I include the almond oil in the lye calculation? And, do I take a smaller lye discount since I'll be adding superfatting oil at trace? If I normally take a 7% lye discount, how much should I take if I'll be adding almond oil at trace?

Soap buddy, I would love to do that too but I am still qutie color chalanged. It seems that no 2 oxides or micas I've tried work the same. Some micas dissapear altogether and some work well. Some are really strong and some are not. If I ever get it figured out Id add it to the oils too. That goes for FOs too. Although Im getting pretty good at knowing how much to use.
