I'm trying a M&P shaving soap, the constant ingredient seems to be clay. I think this is to help the blade slide better. I went to my local health food store that has a few things for making your own soaps and picked up a very little of the only clay they had on that day - it was called midnight black clay. There is so many, is there one clay that is better then another for shaving soap??

One recipe I came across called for dried honey powder. Has any heard of it or used it??

Thanks,

I use china clay. I don't use honey powder as that can make the soap sticky.

This is my all time favorite for shaving soap.Ingredients:
1 fl oz Aloe Vera Gel Whole Leaf
½ tsp Arrowroot Powder
4 oz Melt & Pour Premium Goat's Milk Soap Base (cut into 2-inch cubes)
2 oz Melt & Pour Silky Shea Butter Soap Base (cut into 2-inch cubes)
1 tsp Kaolin Clay
¼ fl oz Calendula Flower Extract
¼ fl oz Lavender Essential Oil (or EO of your choice)
One Decorative 8-10 oz mug (Dollar Store, Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, Wal-Mart)

Method:
Pre-measure your ingredients and have them ready. You'll want to work fast so that the soap base doesn't skin over before you're ready to pour.

Mix the Aloe Vera Gel and Arrowroot Powder together. Blend well.

Melt the Goat's Milk and Shea Butter soap bases together in a microwave-safe glass measuring cup (Pyrex).

Add the Kaolin Clay to the melted soap base and whisk until thoroughly blended.

Add the Aloe Vera Gel/Arrowroot Powder mixture, Calendula Extract and Essential Oil.

Blend thoroughly and immediately pour into mug(s) or molds and spritz with rubbing alcohol.

Packaging idea: Tie a shaving brush to the cup handle with raffia or a luxurious satin cord (depending on the cup design) and shrink wrap for a professional finish.

Yield: One 8- to 10-ounce mug

Your recipe looks nice and it was grand of you to share it. Have you made it many times?

May I ask the purpose of the arrow root?

Arrowroot Powder..... :D When added to cosmetic recipes, this plant powder acts as a thickener & binder as well as a moisturizer which helps penetrate the skin. When added to dusting powders it provides excellent "absorbing" properties.
Yes I do make it often and I tweek this recipe to make my luxurious facial cleansing bar. SOOOOO CREAMY :D

Yes soapbuddy, I am aware of making no claims about a product. The claims that I stated are not MY opinion but taken from MANY recipe sites as an explanation as to the reason for arrowroot powder in a melt and pour recipe, and there are many. Google it for yourself. All I :D know is my shaving soap is rich and creamy and I can find no reason NOT to use the arrowroot so I will continue to use it. To each his own I guess.

I take whatever recipes I find on the net with a grain of salt. I research each ingredient to make sure it's suitable for my application. Like you say, to each his own.

The original recipe came from a very reputable source and are on a much larger scale than many of us here. We all have started with recipe's handed down or discovered at different soap sites and then tweaked to our own likeing. Brambleberry has many wonderful recipes on there site as well as MANY other sites. Maybe you should post up a recipe section on your site soapbuddy? :D

Hi ,,I have found it to harden up just like a melt and pour soap base should. You really should try it out ....it gives a VERY creamy lather ans sooooo soft.
I use bay rum or sandlewood for men and when I make it into a facial soap I fragrance with lavender EO or OrangeEO. Really a great shaving soap. :)
