Teach Soap

Hi all,

I'm trying to create a palm free bar of soap, to be kinder to the environment (even though my palm is sustainable). What precentages of each would you recommend? I plan on superfating with shea, jojoba, castor (any or all three). Beeswax at 1-3 percent, as some of you kindly recommended.

Most of the soybean oil I've used comes in solid form....like Crisco. Here is something I pulled off a soap site when I first started soaping about 6 years ago. I use crisco for certain recipes and never had a problem with it. I don't think your soap will have a short shelf life or go rancid. You may experience some DOS though....depending on your climate. Soapbuddy could probably shed more light on this though.

Vegetable Shortening or Soybean Oil
Vegetable shortening is normally made out of soybean oil. It is cheap and readily available and produces a mild, stable lather. Use it in combination with other exotic or moisturizing oils. Use this as half of your fats to keep costs down. It is a good filler and makes a very hard white bar when used alone and when mixed with other oils it makes a wonderful hard bar of soap. Use vegetable shortening as a base oil or combine it with other, harder oils for better results. Recommend use as base up to 50% of total oils.

I read that coconut should be used at under 30% to prevent drying. I could play with the percentages of other oils. How does something like this sound:

-25% coconut
- 2 % beeswax (for hardness)
-40 % Olive oil
-20% soybean
-5% shea
-5% cocoa
-3% castor

I would do 20% coconut and add the difference to the soybean.

Thanks Soapbuddy. We have so much soap from my soaping craze a few weeks back. One of the batches (Ann Marie's moisturizing recipe- I modified slightly) was done curing Saturday. I have 3 more small batches currently curing (1 - 2 lbs.each) & will be done a week from today. In addition, I have 2 other recipes we have been using for several weeks now...I just can't stop!

I plan on trying this recipe in a few weeks.
