So I am going to just get a few things to play around with. I realize I am not ready to sell as much as I'd like, but that will come in time. I just get so excited I get ahead of myself. I have been making simple salt scrubs from myself at home, but I want to start really selling them. I know I read a while back that I should add a preservative, in case water from the tub or wherever is introduced into the scrub just to be safe. What is the best preservative for a salt scrub or sugar scrub? I know I see I can buy germaben ii or phenonip, and yall were talking about this in the lotion post. But I figured I would take it over here since it didn't really have to do with lotion. Are they both ok to preserve pretty much most bath products that would need it, or are some products better with certain preservatives than others? Also, I am wanting to experiment with some solid lotion bars and lip balm. Do those need preservatives too?

Does anyone know what the shelf life is with/without the preserv?

Thanks alot for any help explaining this!!

Liquid Germall Plus works the best in shampoos and body/shower gels, conditioners and other high water content products. I would go with Phenonip. Plus it's oil soluble. For lotion bars no preservative is needed.

Shelf life for a scrub without is maybe a week; at most; especially if it's stored in a humid bathroom.

I use Phenonip in my lotions and sugar scrubs. I do not put a preservative in my lotion bars, body butters, or lip balms since there is no water.

On BB's website since it says Phenonip is made of "Phenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Butylparaben and Propylparaben." do we just say phenonip on the ingredients or do we have to list each of those things?

See. Ugh, I have so much to learn! Why is this starting to seem like such a daunting task?! Bath teas don't need preservatives do they? lol

Yeh. It's so funny, I used to hate science class growing up, all the science labs etc. And now I have my little notebook where anytime I make something new or do anything different, I write it down, so I can keep track of if it turned out better or worse! Like last week I made some bath fizzies and I wrote the recipe down and crossed out what I didn't use because I didn't have, and added etc. That way since I liked them so much, now I know exactly what to do again! I am definately not that kind of cook (i just throw stuff in, don't measure etc) but i have been cooking for 15+years so I can eyeball it by now....having to be exact and measuring, writing all this down etc is new to me. So I am trying to do everything by the book! Thanks for all the advice guys!

I know I add the phenonip to my salt scrub at 1%. Do I add it in with my oils, and then pour in the salt, or does it matter?

I mix it in at the end. I don't know if it really matters when you add it though.

But I don't need to heat it or anything?
