When using a tray mold do you apply anything to the mold to help release the soap?

I used petroleum jelly and it leaves a film on the soap not to mention it's a pain in the rear to get in all the nooks and crannies.

I put the mold in the freezer for about 10 minutes. Then I gently wiggle the corners of the mold (upside down) and the soap comes right out.

I've been thinking about making those soaps that look like citrus slices. The info I've found says to use 3 different size of PVC pipe. I've bought the pipe and cut it to length but I'm too scared to try it!! The only hint I've found says to grease the inside with vaseline (Petroleum jelly) but following tlc's comments I'm worried that the soap will come out covered in vaseline and i won;t be able to imbed it in the next layer!! Any ideas?

That's what worries me!! I was thinking if I ran the outside of the mold under the hot tap that might help it to slide out? I'm just really not too keen on putting anything that will stay on the soap.
Has anyone else tried pipes as molds?

Thanks for your help soapbuddy. I've spent the last 2 hours searching the net for info ... talk about conflicting advice!!!!! Slather the inside with petroleum jelly, put a tiny amount of petroleum jelly in, don't put anything in it, spray with vegetable oil ... you name it ... they suggest it!!.
The best piece of advice I've come across is to have a clean mould, leave soap overnight, put in freezer for 15 - 30 minutes, then PUSH!! Ha ha. It then says if you have trouble getting the mould out, run warm water on the outside briefly and try again.
Think I'll try that one. I want to make citrus slice soaps. The ones I've seen look like the ones on Soap Queen TV but you make them in a log rather than individually - which suits me as a lazy soap maker!

ToPurpleMolly, What I do is slice the pvc pipe in half making sure it is sliced evenly and then when I'm making the soap I put tight rubberbands on it and duck tape so the soap won't leak out, then when they're hard I just take that stuff off and It's very easy to take the soap out. Well, that's the way I do it. I hope that helps.

You are a legend wildchild! I wish I'd read this last night. I thought yesterday, I'm just going to bite the bullet and have a go. Made the first lot and while it was setting went to the supermarket and got the groceries - bought a small bottle of Plum Sauce (which I measured to make sure was small enough to fit in the pipe) and used it when I got home to push the soap out of the mold. So far so good! Loved the look of the soap tube - sliced it lengthways to get my segments, poured a little clear in the base of the pipe and set the segments in. I'd got my husband to cut the three pipes a bit too long though and couldn't get the segments to sit in neatly. Melted and poured the white around the segments as best I could. Waited for an hour or so and then wrapped the end of the original pipe with plastic wrap and used it to force out the second soap tube. This is where my disappointment came. As I had been unable to hold the cut segments straight, they had gone on an angle about halfway down and the white hadn't gone all the way to the bottom ... what to do? I cut them all up and made a loaf! Happy-ish with the result. Now I KNOW what to do - cut the pipes shorter and cut down the side for easy release!! Will try it next weekend!

Even though it wasn't what you envisioned, I think it looks very nice!
