Teach Soap

I just unmolded my soap from my new soaphutch mold. I must have done something wrong because it was very hard to unmold. The soap was Olive Oil, Coconut, Palm, Caster and Shea butter. It's the same formula I've been using, I just ran it through the soap calc to increase the amount. It sat in the mold for about 36 hours. Was that too long? Should I unmold sooner? If so, how long? Should I have sprayed the mold with mineral oil or something before I poured the soap in? I covered the mold with plastic wrap, but did not insulate it. The top looked too dry as if I was going to get soap ash. Should I have insulated it? I didn't do the cphp, because of the weight when filled. It's now out of the mold and cut, but I'm sure there's a easier way. It took my husband and son to get the soap out of the mold. Everytime I think I know what I'm doing.............LOL

Sometimes, soap molds that do not use liners just take longer to release.

You could spray down with mineral oil or Pam. Or you could wait longer than 36 hours to get the soap out of the mold. Something closer to 4-7 days might be better and give the soap a bit of time to shrink away from the sides of the mold.

I have had minor problems with unmolding in the beginning. I just stuck the mold in the freezer til the soap was completely frozen, then ran hot water over the outside of the mold. That might not work if you have a slab mold. I would try it next time with a light coat of mineral oil or vaseline. As the mold gets seasoned, it should be easier to get the soap out of the mold.

Thanks. As usual I knew where to ask for help. As the mold is large, it wouldn't fit in the freezer. What about the covering it? Also if I spray it should I give it more time in the mold? When I got it out, the sides were moist.

You're welcome. Do you know if it gelled? Ungelled soaps take longer to harden and need to be in the mold longer. Have you considered using beeswax and/or sodium lactate in your recipe?

I don't think it gelled, my house isn't warm enough. That's why I thought I should have wrapped it up. I have used both beeswax and sl for soap I made in plastic molds, but prior to this new mold I was using silicone pans and didn't need it. The soap hardened and looks great, I just was worried it was so hard to get out. But I love the mold!

It's the craftline divider mold. It Makes 24 bars if I only fill 1/3 full. It's 4" deep.
