What is the appearance of a soap that is too old to sell?

What should one do with a soap that is too old to sell?

I'm not trying to be fresh here, but I'd consider any soap too old to sell if it was one I wouldn't purchase myself. Faded color, lack of scent, something that's been banged around or less than perfect.... Otherwise, if soap is in good condition, no matter the age, I'd say it was sale-worthy, as it just improves as it gets older. As for what to do with soap that is not in sale-able condition? Rebatch, use in laundry, basement etc, or donate to a family shelter.

Kim,

What a great idea to donate to a shelter. We have several here in town and I think that I will make it a practice to give one or two bars per batch away. After all what you give to the world comes back to you many times over. Thanks for the nudge!

You could shred it and add it to another scented batch.

Well I could but I purchased this soap so that wouldn't do. At over $2.00 an ounce and then add shipping I'm just very disappointed.

In my opinion old soap is;

faded

lost it's original fragrance

it is brittle

shrunken

and pock marked.

Bun on the other hand I'm really new at this so what do I know.

Does that just about cover it? Curious!

Call me confused, but you bought soap at a retail price that you are trying to sell at retail?

I'm glad you like the shelter idea, Susie, I started donating to the shelter in the next town when I ran out of room in the basement for my "practice bars". I figure it's always welcome, 'cuz let's face it, everybody has to wash :D

Mella, I'm with soapbuddy--- confused. I'm not sure we're understanding your question correctly. Can you clarify for us? Thanks.

I sorry perhaps I was too cryptic, as I don't want to embarrass any one, including me haha and lol. This is research right of product and of postal process?

I purchased 6 high end soaps. They were delivered to me late, and all six were in an envelope and sent throught the postal service traveled quite a distance. This was an envelope that was marked FLAT RATE ENVELOPE.

Other than being beat up, two of the soaps appear not as photographed, and one especially looks like it was forgotten on a shelf for a few years. I don't want to complain and will more than likely keep it for myself and use the others for gifts. So 4 out of 6 isn't a bad purchase.

So again the question is how to identify an old soap something that should not be sold. As someone new to this process it is a valid question. I don't even plan on selling any soap as it is my hobby. That might change in the future, but I doubt it as then it isn't a hobby it is a business and that I'm not willing to do.

Thanks any and all who care to comment I appreciate it truly. Mella

I see. Can you contact the person that sold you these soaps and tell her what you told us here? She should know.

Thanks for the clarification, Mella. Of course your question is a valid one! Sorry for the confusion, in your original question I assumed you were asking for information on soap that would be too old for YOU to sell and what to do with your un-sale-able bars.

I would definitely follow up with the seller and let her know you were disappointed in 2 of the soaps and tell her why. When you purchase something I don't think you should have to settle for 2nd rate or old soaps...you have every right to expect the product to appear as it was photographed or described. If this person cares about his/her business they should want to make it right for you. I don't sell, but if I did, I would be mortified to find out someone thought my product was old or less than 100% as advertised. You deserve replacement or refund in my opinion.

So I guess my answer to your question of how to identify a soap that is too old to be sold: anything that is less than perfect. Hope this helps!

Just an update.

I did speak to the soap maker and she believes that perhaps the ugly weather had an effect on the soap. She was kind enough to refund the price, and asked me to order again when the weather lightens up a bit. I was told that I was not the only person who was having this problem, so I didn't feel like such a moaner! More than likely I will do a re-order when things warm up. I just loved that blue soap, and of course the one I loved and got for me was the one that was pockmarked and descicated!

Yes I will reorder come spring! This soaper has never had a problem sending 6 boxed soaps in a flat rate envelope and have them crushed either, so who know where that poor envelope went and WHAT happened to it!.

was it an envelope or a box??? I wouldn't think any soap would be safe in an envelope even with padding.

Hi Linda,

six soaps squarish in lovely individual soap boxes in a flat rate envelope, not even bubble wrap. The PO did a real number on it.

I have received things in the mail in FR envelopes before, not a big deal, but everything fit well in the FR envelope and was covered in bubble wrap for protection.

Personally I don't think if bubble wrap had been used in this case it would have helped very much, just a bit!

Oh well it's a new year! Happy New Year bubble buddies~
