Teach Soap

I started doing baskets for people as gifts when I was 15....mostly tolietries and m&p soap. It pretty much started because I couldn't paint or draw, but wanted to do something handmade and special for friends and family for the holidays. I saw a kit at Micheals Craft store, and was hooked! I'm 25 now, and *just* getting ready to try CP. (Everything is measured out as I type lol). I was just curious to know when other people first got interested in making their own products, and what made you try it?

I started making candles for fun when I was a kid. We would use the straight parrafin wax from the grocery store and use cut up milk cartons for a mold. Gawd! The candles were awful back then but we didn't know any bettter. The fun was making something handmade.

Now I make and sell candles and M&P soap, lotion, and lip balm. I didn't start my biz until 4 years ago. Its small for now and I still get a kick out of making handmade things.

I was allowed to make soaps by myself in 1969. Before that, it was only under the supervision of either my mother or grandmother. The soap that was made was mostly used for laundry, since their resources were very limited. They also made potions, infused oils, syrups and balms.

Candybee...funny story. I did that as well, except I'm clumsy as heck. Melted the wax, added crayons for color from my baby sisters stash...went to pour it into those little "frozen fruit juice" rounds, tripped/fell and got wax EVERYWHERE. I swear, it was even in places I didn't go! Mom had a fit....it took forever getting it up. I finally took a razorblade and started scraping it up for hours. Needless to say, I haven't made candles since....I figure at least soap will clean up after itself LOL:)

I have been making cp soap for two years. I was inspired by my 9 year old at the time she was making a lot of mud pies with garden and pantry ingredients. Her favorite movie is Practical magic and she loved the bath and beauty store they opened along with the magic part of course, so she told me that is what we should do and I tried it and love it. I haven't ventured into lotions or anything else, I just love homemade soap. Good luck with your soaping.

Frozenfire98, I started making CP soap 10 years ago. My daughter and I went to a one-day workshop, and I loved the creativity of it. I've just been making soap for family since then, nothing special, but I've suddenly become interested in M&P. Then I discovered this forum, and from reading M&P and CP posts, I've gone mad for CP again as well. But now I'm trying EVERYTHING different. Yesterday I made beer soap, and OMH. Today I made M&P with loofah rounds. I've already sold some M&P (15 cakes) at the local craft outlet. This is a fabulous hobby for creative people who can't draw or paint - definitely with you there!
