One of these days I'm going to make beer soap...but I was just thinking about it and wondering what you would scent it with. I'm from an area known for its love of beer and cheese so I think people here would like beer soap (as gifts, I'm not going into the biz) but what would you scent it with? I mean I suppose you could scent it with anything but I would think you would want something really....special for beer soap. At least in my mind anyway. Any ideas?

I make beer soap with whatever hubby happens to be drinking...usually something dark. The last batch was made with Black Toad or something. Anyway, I say this to tell you that the beer smell does tend to linger a little in my soaps. It's not bad but you wouldn't want a floral scent for sure! I've used more spicy scents...Arabian Spice, Vanilla, etc. No need for color either when it's dark beer, comes out a beautiful chocolate brown color!

The more full bodied the beer, the more the scent of the hops comes through. Amber, Vanilla and/or Patchouli would be good choices for a scent.

I make beer soap from a local micro brewer. Beer makes a great shampoo bar BTW. I've used Amber, Lavender, Patchouli, Mahogany, (anything warm scented) and had good results. I'd stay away from florals though.

Ok now I'm interested... I saw some of these somewhere on the internet and was hoping someday to make some...since I also come from the land of beer and cheese. But now that the subject has come up I am wondering if the beer takes the place of some of the water in the lye mixture? We have a local brewery in town and they have a couple of dark beers and I swear they almost taste like chocolate! My favorite beer is negro modelo from mexico... so smooth.... bet it would make great soap if I could be talked into giving one up. Look forward to seeing your results, if you are able to post photos.

If you decide to make beer soap with 100% of beer with your lye, make sure that the beer is VERY flat and VERY vold.

Hi,

How would you make a beer shampoo soap. I'm sure that it would be lovely on your hair. My mum used to wash our hair with beer shampoo as kids, also egg shampoo.

Any ideas and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use a bottle of beer in place of the water for my 3lbs batches. I put it on the scale and if I need more liquid I just add water. Mine's usually very cold but not flat. I haven't had any problems yet but it does foam a bit. I use a good balanced recipe and up the % of Castor oil (I used 15%) and add some hair loving oil like Jojoba. I also added a tsp salt PPO. Some people love them, some (me included) hate them. DH likes them for the gym and travel.

Beer has natural sugars, so it should give you more bubbles.

Thanks for all the replies! I will have to make some of that soon...I'm on my 3rd batch right now so still keeping it simple but I can't wait to make beer soap.

Susie, I see you're in OK...I'm in GB, how weird to find someone here so close to home!

Mortie,

How did you come to start making soap? I took a night class at the tech in Appleton... had some problems with my first batch and thats how I found this forum. Just flew out of GB to visit my dtr in Maine. Go Packers!!!!!!! I will try the beer soap, but not with my modelo if I have to let it go flat. I still need to get a few more batches to work out before I expand my experiments. I still hope you post a photo after you are done with a batch.
