I've been reading a lot about soaps "gelling" on this site. I wasn't told about gel when I did the soap workshop, and haven't seen it mentioned in any books I've read. Please, can someone explain to me what exactly it is? Is it good or bad? How do you:-
a) make it happen? b) stop it from happening?

I'm picking up SO MUCH info, reading this forum from top to bottom!!

Hi Suzanne,

I discovered the gel experience on my third batch of CP soap made last week. This time I used a silicone loaf pan which is deeper than the other molds that I have been using. I took a peep at it after about an hour after pouring, and it had gelled to the edges. It was giving out a huge amount of heat so I left the cover off for some time, to let the heat escape and then recovered it. After unmolding the following morning it was like cutting beautiful cheese.

Thanks Soapbuddy. That is interesting. At the workshop I attended, we were told the soap had to be kept warm after pouring. It was suggested an insulated food carrier would be good to use, and leave for at least 24 hours, longer for olive oil soap. It's interesting how different people have different methods of doing things. Not right or wrong, just different. Thanks again.

So gelled soaps are cut in 24 hours and cured for 4-6 weeks while rotating.

So un-gelled soaps when do you cut and how long for the cure? Thanks Soapbuddy and Suzanne this is so interesting!
