Hi,
I am a newbie to soapmaking and have been looking up some recipes on American websites ( I live in Australia) that call for vegetable shortening and some with crisco. Is it vegetable oil and if so, is there a particular grade that you use. Are they liquid oils or solid. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

As far as I know their Crisco is similar to the solid vegetable oil available in some supermarkets... I haven't used vege oil as yet, I use olive oil and copha (coconut oil)

Good luck with your soap endevours!

Thank you Toady,

I looked at the ingredients for Copha and it contains lecithin. Does this affect the outcome of the soap and would you care to share your recipe for it.

Many thanks

Crisco is mostly hydrogenated soybean oil; at least it used to be. If Copha contains lecithin, that will slow down your trace. Try any recipe from Kathy Miller web site. I don't have the link at the moment, but if you google it, it should come right up.

Thank you Soapbuddy,

I have looked at the Miller soap website and it is very informative.

What recipes would you recommend that are your favourites. I want to make CP soap that is unperfumed and uncoloured. Just natural.

Thanks

One of my best sellers is an unscented goats milk soap. Start with any basic recipe and substitute goats milk for 1/2 or more of the water in the recipe.

I think ingredients in Crisco are dependent on the area in which it is produced. My Crisco can says hydrogenated palm oil.

I've noticed that with Crisco lately as well... now has palm oil.

But the generic brands of vegetable shortening I've seen still seem to be soybean and cottonseed so they should be ok for most soap calculators.

Hi Country Girl. Do they sell Frymasta in Brissie? I use it sometimes for my CP. It's a solid vegetable oil, sold in a square 500gm block. I don't know what's in it. I wrote to them once, and explained I was interested because I made soap with it, but I think they must have thought I was joking, because I never heard back from them!

Hi Suzanne,

I'll have a look for it in Coles and Woolies. I have been looking at some great recipes on the millersoap webpage, where they suggest Crisco. Have you tried any of these with Frymasta?

Thanks for your help

Cheers

I haven't tried any Crisco recipes with Frymasta. When I first learned CP, we were told olive oil, copha or frymasta were the best oils for beginners. I've been happy with them, so stuck with them. I'm a bit lazy as far as fiddling around with different oils. Tried and true keeps me happy!

After I went to the soapmaking workshop, I bought a book by Melinda Coss, with beautiful soap recipes, and photos. I made 5 or 6 of those, then settled back to the boring one oil, bit of superfatting, and maybe fragrance (which didn't work too good in my CP). I can post some of the recipes, if it's OK with the moderators. The book is 10 years old, but I guess still under copyright.
